Asparagus question..... Empty Asparagus question.....

Post  quiltbea 4/29/2011, 1:02 pm

I planted my asparagus today but since I had to wait several days for the weather to dry, I kept them spritzed but they also sprouted.

I had added an inch of compost to the bed about 3 weeks ago and today as I made the trenches, I also added 3-4 scoops of compost into the trench.

I dug trenches, as suggested, 6" deep for Jersey Knights (it used to be 12" deep but that is for the Washington series) with a hill down the middle where I spread the roots out around them. Buried the crowns with 2" of soil over the crowns.

Now I'm supposed to wait for them to grow a bit and fill in the trench with more soil as they grow.
Asparagus question..... 04-29-12

My dilemma.....the crowns sprouted eyes which are actually asparagus tips, and I don't know if I should bury those now or wait a bit and add more soil later. Or should I have snapped those sprouts right off the crown? The tops of the crowns themselves are 2" under the soil.

Please, I want to do this right. They'll stay here for 15 years and they need to be comfy. Let me know if I should add more soil around those sprouting tips.
Or maybe I should cut them off entirely. I'm a newbie when it comes to asparagus.

My raised bed is over 3 feet wide and I trenched left to right, 18" apart from each other with the crowns 8" apart in the trench per instructions. The buckets are filled with the removed garden soil with which I will fill the trenches as needed.

Help!

I am new at asparagus, so, for what it is worth, my guy told me to bury the itty bitty asparagus that came from the crown up to the tip (not to snap it off), as that grew I was to fill the trench as you wrote about, but not to completely bury the tip, it needs to grow up and feed the new plant for next year.

1. Hope that helps some.
2. Hope someone who is more experienced than myself answers.

Deborah....tasted mine and they were like vegetable candy!

Thanks Debs, for the help.
I think you're probably right. I should leave those sprouts alone.
A couple of them broke off when I was planting, but I left the rest as is.
