Asparagus Question
Our 4x4 asparagus box has been going merrily along for several years now. If you have ever visited our blog ya know ya aint gotta look hard to find either the tasty asparaguys cooked some way or the beautiful ferns in the back ground. Anyways here is my long winded question. There was a big oak tree cut down by my friends house. When they ran the whole tree through one of those big tree chipper things. My friend asked them what they were gonna do with those chips. When they said take them to the land fill he started a country boy negotiation and for a bag of beef jerky he had smoked he got a dump truck full of wood chips in his yard. This was a year ago and they are still half there we have been using them for mulch and such. This brings me to my question. I just cut our asparagus back for its fall crop and it is pushing up now. Do yall think it could push up through an inch of wood chips??Now that the asparagus has been cut back and fed with organic compost and some fertilizer the weeds are growing faster than the Asparagouses

I don't know the acidity of oak chips but for sure you want to mulch those asparagus when you are ready for them to go back to ferns. At least 2 to 3 inches of straw or something. Way to go with your crop!!

Re: Asparagus Question
We have used hey before loosely but was wondering abut the chips cause I have a large free supply We pick em all spring then let them go to big unruly ferns. We cut them to the ground last week and they started over and will go till first frost which some years never happens
Re: Asparagus Question
Cappy,
Do you cut a 2nd. crop? I have if they come up thick enough.
I would try in 1 area first. I think the asparagus should be able to push thru. You know, you can sprinkle salt on the bed to get rid of the weeds. Asparagus is a saltwater plant-grows wild on/near the beach.

Salt!? Well I'll be. gonna have to investigate that. I've heard that ocean water is also good. Readily available here. May try that on one half of the bed. We were disappointed in our harvest from our second cutting do letting it go back to ferns. Since our seasons are so out of sync with the mainland it is challenging to know when to pick and when to let go.

Re: Asparagus Question
I added 2 inches of fresh compost dirt to the bed and the weeds are now under control. Think I'll hold off on the mulch till this winter. Actually this is our third crop this year we pick most leave each root a couple to grow to ferns and when they get tall and unruley we wack them back to the ground and start over. Peggy picked a hand full this morning and several smaller roots are already putting up ferns. They have plenty time to grow down here In Cajun country.
Re: Asparagus Question
Jo, do you whack yours back before you get the 2nd crop? I haven't cut or even eaten a first crop yet as my bed is only 2 yrs old and now it's been putting up a 2nd crop over the past couple of weeks. Should I whack after the 1st crop once they are unruly like Cappy does?littlejo wrote:

Normally it's only the warmer regions that can get a 2nd cutting. it has to be able to be cut for a couple weeks, and grow back the fronds before freezing weather, so it can winter over well and be ready for spring cutting.

Re: Asparagus Question
I picked up 5 roots in late spring that were half price at Home Depot. Didn't have a place to put the so they are in a big flower pot and made nice and bushy ferns, I've never grown asparagus and don't know what to do now and still don't have a permanent home for them. I can bury pot and all under a pile of pine needles for the winter.

Re: Asparagus Question
Kay,
The pine needles would be fine. I always cut the greenery after it freezes well, here that is late Jan. or Feb. I doubt you will get spears to eat til you can give them room to grow.
Mine are in a 4x8 bed of MM, but my grandparents put them on a fence row, that normally would have to be weedwacked

Re: Asparagus Question
After working the bed some and adding some compost, organic fertilizer, and a sac of miracle grow garden soil we had scored on sale The asparagus is going to town. WE have several new plants putting out their skinny lil ferns and several of our older plants are making nice thick shoots. The ferns we let go are already over 2 ft tall and have plenty time to grow before we get a frost. Once they die down this winter I plan to wack them back again work the bed and try the wood chips for mulch the straw we have been getting has lots of seeds in it and force us to have to weed lots till the ferns choke the grass out. Wood chips are plentiful and free at the moment so might as well sue em while I got em.
Re: Asparagus Question
this is my first year with asparagus. how do you support them. they're having a resurge after struggling thru the summer. It seems they like to grow tall, then flop over.

Re: Asparagus Question
I let mind flop. But your box looks like you could put some twine or such from corner to corner through the center, and also around the outside, for a bit of support.

Re: Asparagus Question
they won't break if you let them flop over? I had put up twine this spring and summer. It might still be there, not sure, but these are new outgrowth.CapeCoddess wrote:I let mind flop. Re: Asparagus Question
Hmm...possibly but I haven't noticed that. They mostly seem to tilt over and not break. Maybe if we just think of the broken one as a picked one, others will grow up around it.
