Nice looking Lemons!
Yardslave, my oranges are turning orange and starting to fall off. Normally, they aren't ripe until Christmas. Is this the warm weather?

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Thanks, Sanderson. My oranges are still hard, so I'll leave them for awhile, but I think it's time to pick all those lemons and bring the tree inside for the winter.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
I found my first patty pan squash. YEE-HAH! I hope the little guy makes it okay in the greenhouse.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
I hope it survives. We're having trouble getting the heat going right in there.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Almost finished covering the "salad bar" in about 5" of leaves. It's slow going because half of it is still planted, so I'm side dressing individual plants in some areas. I need to finish tomorrow, cuz we're expecting some serious rain Sat & Sun.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Killing frost last night - I wasn't paying attention to the weather as I thought we were good for a while (dummy!!!) Oh well... we were pretty well done anyway. Picked the last of the zucchini today, 3 rather miserable looking specimens and about 20+ lbs of cherry tomatoes in varying degrees of ripeness, mostly green. I'm going to put them in containers in my greenhouse and try to ripen them up all at once for a final dehydrating session.
Thank goodness we got the greenhouse closed in on Monday.
Any of you have frost?
An artist's work-life related funny... I am working on a crazier than usual deadline for a hand and tote bag manufacturer and it's all summer oriented: coastal, ocean, beach and tropical designs, lol! I need to have 5 or 6 collections done for them by mid-December. I guess I'll go sit in my warm greenhouse if I lack inspiration

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
No frost here, yet. Gonna be 37-38 tonight. Hasn't been lower than that, yet, and no frost in the 10-day forecast. Still have 2 little zukes and a few tomatoes left out. Peas are starting to produce. Kale etc. still going strong outside. Now I'm off to check your art stuff.audrey.jeanne.roberts wrote:Any of you have frost?

It's getting down right nippy. In the 40's at night and 60's in the day. Nothing is covered yet, as most are frost resistant, except some tiny various lettuces. I also planted 4 Seasons so I hope they will do good with some protection this winter.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
4 seasons doesn't need frost protection so it will probably do even better under coversanderson wrote:It's getting down right nippy. In the 40's at night and 60's in the day. My lettuce, spinach, beet and carrot seedlings are in the boxes and doing well.
Hubby and I were laughing at how much we love the first and last zucchini. By August we get pretty "over" it, and give most away, lol!
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Sounds like kale and me when it is time to plant the tomatoes and peppers. The freezer has a healthy supply!audrey.jeanne.roberts wrote:4 seasons doesn't need frost protection so it will probably do even better under coversanderson wrote:I also planted 4 Seasons so I hope they will do good with some protection this winter.

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
We juice most of our kale so it gets used up nicely. I've finally gotten my taste buds accustomed to a little bit of kale in my salads. It took time, but now I don't even taste it much and it's so healthy for us.Sounds like kale and me when it is time to plant the tomatoes and peppers. The freezer has a healthy supply!

Rain forecast for 9 of the next 10 days. This thread could grow cobwebs by then. Where was all this rain last year or the 3 years before? Why couldn't we spread it out or send some of it down south?
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
I have oldest son and his sons (3 and 5) visiting this weekend, so my visits to the Forum will be spotty.

We love to have our grandchildren visit with us. They are so cute and lovable and fun to have around. Our son's two (boy 9, girl almost 6) live close by. But our daughter's three (boy 8, girl 6, girl almost 5) are a 6 hour drive from us. The two girl's who have birthdays coming up were born on December 24 (the one who will be 5) and December 27. When we add in my mom's and daughter's birthdays (both on December 31) and son's birthday (January 4), it makes for a busy end of year season for us.

Hasn't stopped raining since I posted this. We got 2" yesterday.countrynaturals wrote:Rain forecast for 9 of the next 10 days. This thread could grow cobwebs by then. Where was all this rain last year or the 3 years before? Why couldn't we spread it out or send some of it down south?
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
We only had a few dribbles yesterday afternoon. Hoping we get a significant amount. I haven't looked at today's forecast to see if any changes are in order, yesterday it said we would get just under .60 inches of rain today.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
I sure hope our excess is finding its way down south where it can do some good and not just wandering out to sea.audrey.jeanne.roberts wrote:We only had a few dribbles yesterday afternoon. Re: California - What are you doing this month?
It rained intermittently last night and I am overjoyed as the weather prediction didn't favor the storm's impact as far South as my region. Couldn't have been better timing. I just transplanted an olive tree that had been waiting all summer to get planted. I removed a 4' tall 3-tiered fountain that was a waste of water and replaced it with a nice healthy olive tree. Much more pleasing to the eye!

Glad to hear it, Yardslave. I was afraid we were being greedy up here and keeping it all to ourselves.Yardslave wrote:It rained intermittently last night and I am overjoyed as the weather prediction didn't favor the storm's impact as far South as my region. Re: California - What are you doing this month?
We received 0.6". It was a nice hard, but not damaging, rain so it did a lot of cleaning.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
We got 2.6". Today we're getting a break, but then it's gonna rain until next Tuesday, then 1 day off, rain the next day, and that's as far out as the forecast goes. Just scratch out "California" on my profile and write in "Oregon."sanderson wrote:We received 0.6". It was a nice hard, but not damaging, rain so it did a lot of cleaning.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Barely anything. It only started about 5ish this morning and there is no standing water anywhere so I would say barely measurable rain. Doesn't look like it made it this far east.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
I hope you are successful, my attempts at growing tender plants like squash in the greenhouse have been failures. Are you heating your greenhouse?countrynaturals wrote:I found my first patty pan squash. YEE-HAH! I hope the little guy makes it okay in the greenhouse.
