Re: Polar Vortex
Texas.
I don't know what has happened to change our weather, but we have not had a single triple-digit day so far this summer (15 July). That is very unusual for central Texas.
As for the so-called polar vortex event, not only are our temps lower than normal all week, but we also have prospects for RAIN all week - maybe an inch or more. This is VERY unusual for this time of year here.

Re: Polar Vortex
A week or so ago typhoon neoguri changed and cooled off the jet stream in the area of Japan. It has now reached many of us by bouncing across the earth like a giant ribbon and cooling temperatures briefly. I watch closely since my son is in Japan and Mom worries about these things

Re: Polar Vortex
I need to amend the post above, for any true weather geeks, I guess we're having a circumpolar vortex, not a true polar vortex. But hey, I got the typhoon activity part right!

That's because we have had them all starting in around APRIL!!!! YUCK!!! I'd love a polar vortex by any namerabbithutch wrote:Texas.

Re: Polar Vortex
When's it supposed to start? My weather isn't forecast to change at all for the next week. hazy, hi 70's, humid, no rain...same ol' same ol'. Not complaining, mind you, well, except for maybe the rain part. We had an extended heat wave this time last year.

Re: Polar Vortex
Our weather here in New England seems to be have been affected as the day temps have stayed in the 80s and night time temps have and will continue to dip into the high 50s. Even with the low temps, humidity is pretty bad so the low temps do not provide needed relief and increases chances of pending plant disease. I don't want to stress my plants, but I've held off watering for an extra day thinking we were going to get soaked. Still hoping...

CC, I think the coast is clear (pun intended) as the storm systems seem to be hovered over Middlesex Country and west/north. Right now the sky looks pretty ominous.

Re: Polar Vortex
Still, just watching the weather and this is the second time in a week where they have mentioned the possibility of tornadoes. I've lived here all my life and that is very very unusual.

Re: Polar Vortex
The Weather Channel likes to talk about tornadoes, so I wouldn't worry unless there's a tornado watch for the state.GardenGroupie wrote:Still, just watching the weather and this is the second time in a week where they have mentioned the possibility of tornadoes. What was very very unusual, was a tornado warning on May 27!
And on June 10, 2008 Vermont was under a tornado watch until 6 PM because of a heatwave with a cool front following.
I had 97 F on that day and that's unusual for June!
(especially when it wasn't even the 21st!)

I was watching NECN and they do like to sensationalize the weather. Still, tornado watches in ME. Being told if you don't have a basement, try to find something to protect your head - like a pillow or something. UGH.

The F5 tornado that hit Jarrell, Texas, occurred on May 27, 1996. I remember it both because I was only 15 miles away and because it was the 102nd anniversary of my Dad's birth.
