Growing Heirloom vegetables
Hi,
I've ordered some Heirloom vegetable seeds from rareseeds.com. Are their special precautions I must take when planting them...such as avoidance of cross pollination, special steps to ensure they pollinate, etc? Is there a link which could educate me regarding Heirloom procedures?
Thanks,
Mazzy

Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
Mazzy, different types of veggies are managed different ways. It would be helpful if you named the specific veggies you'll be planting.
Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
I'm only doing heirlooms too. One thing to look at is cross-pollination. Many things in the same family should be planted either at a different time or FAR (up to a mile) away. Baker Creek has a really good catalog they'll send you for free.
You might look at Seed Saver's Exchange website. Great info there! Lots of videos, articles, etc.

Thanks. I'll check out Seed Saver's website. I'm beginning by planting onions, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beets, peas, squash, and radish.
Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
Baker's Creek has a store in Petaluma. Nice Saturday drive across the Bridge.
Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
It's located in an old bank. The photos don't capture the number of racks located to the left as you walk in. Don't forget to visit the basement.
Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
Wow what a cool store. I think I could spend hours there, like I used to do in bookstores.

None of these should need to be kept separate from others of their types. That only matters if you are planning to do seed saving or the part you eat is the seeds (like corn).mazzy wrote:Thanks. Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
Baker Creek also has locations in Missouri & CT. Hope to go to the CT store on my next visit up north.

Very good analogy.
Re: Growing Heirloom vegetables
We'll be in Branson, MO later this month, but I know I won't be able to sneak a side trip to the store. :-(
