Re: Hello from the Northeast Coast
Thank you AtlantaMarie....Im regrouping now....I got my first info regarding SFG from the internet. I just got the book in the mail yesterday. Seems that some things have changed. I already ordered by mail, a 15 lbs of worm poop...... . Im hoping someone can direct me to the source of vermiculite. I purchased bags after a clerk at our local mill said no one else around sold anything other. And it doesn't seem to be very course to me. Im looking for all the help I can get

Welcome Candy
I'm from western Mass. Had trouble finding coarse vermiculite locally, as well. Settled for medium. Many Agway dealers, if they don't stock it can order it in for you to pick up at their store. I found an Agway feed and grain/garden/hardware store over the line in CT. that carried it. $32 for 4 cu ft bag. It's cheaper on line but the shipping cost is obscene.
Welcome to the forum and to SFG. You'll love it!

Re: Hello from the Northeast Coast
Hey Candy. Welcome.
The vermiculite I actually found at my local lumber yard in the insulation department. Another thing to keep in mind is that perlite is a perfectly good alternative to the vermiculite and can be bought at Agway, etc.
Try sourcing various composts through Craigslist or Freecycle,

Hi Candy!
The Cape Agways and some local nurseries have vermiculite. Also, I believe there's a source link somewhere on this forum. I sat down with the phone and called around til I found the cheapest bags.
I'm ready for a little warmth, how about you?

OH, we garden in the rain and cold! I'm from FL as are about half the New England folks on this forum. Check out the New England April thread and you can see where we're all at with our dirty hands.

Re: Hello from the Northeast Coast
Welcome to the northeast. Its colder and the winters are longer, but we don't get those hundred plus temps and the droughts that ruin crops either. And the cool weather crops can be grown in spring and then again in fall.
Like anything else, you get used to it. I lived in Florida for 3 years and that took some adjusting.
If you have questions, there's plenty of us New Englanders on the board. Good luck.
