Re: Anyone have asparagus yet?
decided to do a search on another asparagus thread from last year and found that we planted six 2 year old crowns in the spring of 2012 ...... in 2013 last year we found small ferns that didn't show up until AUGUST!.......AUGUST
our original crowns are 4 years old.....and we still haven't been able to harvest any!.....4 years I have been waiting for fresh asparagus.....I only need to eat just one out in the garden to be happy.....just one....please....I don't even know anyone local who grows it or I would be over having tea and munching on theirs while helping them out in their garden....
here is the old thread....its a good read with some good info

Re: Anyone have asparagus yet?
I finally have enough to make a side dish of a side dish...
I am going into my 4th year and have added new crowns each year.
I do admit that I have not weeded well enough in that area in the past, but promise to this year.

Congrats GWN. Oh yes the weeding. As I understand it this veggie cannot compete at all with weeds. I was out there yesterday for 20 minutes pulling tiny weeds out of the 4 by 4 bed. Then put up a chicken wire fence around the bed. Warm days caused the sprouts to outgrew the height of the critter cage.
Rose, I hope yours make an appearance earlier this year than last year!

Re: Anyone have asparagus yet?
We were out of town last week for spring break. We have a few decent sized purple spears poking through. We have 16 crowns a 2 x 2 box. Last year, sometimes we had to split 1 spear among 4 of us or the stuff that started to grow was the size of spaghetti.

Three spears came up today! Phew! I was beginning to get nervous. I have a question. Since this is a brand new bed the instructions say to cover with two inches of soil each time the asparagus sprout. Does this mean to cover only the crowns that have sprouted or does it mean to cover the whole bed with two inches even tho 17 asparagus are still missing? how did you do it?

Re: Anyone have asparagus yet?
At last I have shoots!
The old plants that live in hte peonie plants started last week so I was really wondering when the newer plants in their raised bed would start. Last year I planted 2yo, 1yo, seedlings. So far there is only sign of the 2 yo now 3yos.
CapeCoddess I wish i knew. Last year I ended up staggering the depth the plants were at with the youngest the least deep. This meant the bed was sort of sloped inside. I think I would want to wait until every one is up and then mulch or hill them all at once

I never heard of covering the bed with more soil after harvesting either. I never did. I know I did this when I first planted my seedlings. Every time they showed some green, I covered them with another 2-3 inches of soil and did this about 4 times til the trench bed was even with the rest of the garden bed. I had started with 12" deep trenches.
Today I harvested 3 lovelies and there are 5 more popping up that need a bit more growth. In a day or two I'll have more.

QB, when you first planted your new asparagus bed and the crowns began to sprout, did you cover each srout with 2 or 3 inches of soil as each appeared or did you wait for them all to sprout and then cover the whole bed with 2 or 3 inches of soil all at once? I have only 5 sprouts showing now, which means that 15 are still missing. I'm not sure what to do.

CapeC.....I covered each individual sprout as it popped up. They don't all come up at the same time.

yumm
This is season 3 for my little asparagus bed. We had our first round of asparagus yesterday it was enough for all 5 of us to eat about 1/4 to 1/2 cup. They are SO worth the wait!
I bought my roots at AGWAY and they had me go to youtube and search for planting asparagus. I believe it was to trench them and cover with 2 inches of soil. Then when they came up to add 4" of soil on top. Then it's just a waiting game and mulch over winter (PS mine are on the south side of my home's foundation so it warms faster than other places.)
