How much to plant per person of each veg...
I know in the book in mention that for each person how many boxes to make for them. But how do you figure out how much of what to plant? I found this pretty cool website the has it broken down into how much of each plant you need for each person. This would be a great starting point to help with the planning process...we just need to convert how many plants per square. Than you will know how many square to plant of what.

That article was interesting. I figured 83 squares. I have 74 squares plus 31 pots.
Yet I have to buy veggies all winter for soups, stews and roasted veggies. We probably eat 1 cabbage / week x 4 weeks x 6 months = 24 squares just for cabbage needs. But at least this chart gets one seriously thinking about what it would take for 100% of veggies year around. Canning, freezing, smoking, dehydrating, cold cellar, etc.

Hi mschaef,
It looks like you have found a good basic guide for in-ground gardens. Keep in mind that your SFG yields will be a bit different.
Your best guide for how much to plant is really what, and how much your family likes to eat - and if you plan to preserve some of your harvest.
For example; My family LOVES carrots. We only have three people but I plant 32 squares of carrots - that gives me about 50 pounds that I use all year long. On the other hand, I only plant 2-eggplants. In our warm weather they produce heavily - about 30 medium eggplants per plant.
There are some helpful websites that show vegetable yields in pounds. This one from Mother Earth News is handy because it gives estimates in 100 sq ft.: http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/garden-planning-growing-vegetables-zm0z12onzsie.aspx This one from Harvest to Table is a little different but the same idea: http://www.harvesttotable.com/2011/06/vegetable_crop_yields_plants_p/
So, a good idea might be to make a list of all the vegetables you want to grow, then estimate how much of each you need. You can then divide your SFG space up according to which are your favorites.
Hope this helps,
Gloria

I had trouble with Gloria's links (is there an extra space at the end?); so I found the web pages and copied their URLs. I tried them here in Preview mode and they worked for me.
