Post  floyd1440 8/24/2013, 6:52 am

I used Mel's idea for a trellis I substituted PVC for the steel conduit and works OK.  My current problem is my plants, especially tomatoes, out grow the height of my trellis

If I make it higher it may solve one problem but it will be impossible for some in my family to every reach the top so I have seen some people using cattle panels and arcing them but cannot find any pictures.

Trying to visualize this first I have two 4x8 boxes.  If I construct a new trellis using this methods how do you access the middle of the arced areas over the bed without walking on it?  All I can think of is arcing it between the two beds, the current walkway, but I think this would create too much shade.

Any ideas???

Hi Floyd, if you type in cattle panels or trellis in the search box in the upper left hand corner of the screen you will find several threads with photos of different ways cattle panels have been used.

Here's some to get you started:

My Kentucky SFG

What Up in Canada

July in Elizabeth City

Looking at your beds you could go from one trellis to the other with the arch but it would shade the back bed. How much shade will depend on the direction your beds are placed. So you would have to choose plants for that bed that can take some shade. Or you could put the arch on just the back bed going to the fence behind it with the arch and plant your taller plants in that bed and use the front trellis for your shorter trellised plants. HTH

Mine didn't get to the top of the trellis this year, but a few years back, we just out "go" and they actually went down the back side, then we helped tie them go "up" again. Does that make sense? In other words, they went up, down then back up. It was kind of a "mess" but it worked Smile Good luck. I agree with the above post, you're gonna shade a box if you try the arch in your current set up.

You are right about the shade problem and if I do the arc I think it would only put it on the bottom or lower box.  I am thinking that the upper box would get sun but that is a lot of square with nothing in them on the lower box.

I do have the toms going over the top and coming down as you suggested.  Not pretty but it seems to work!

No doubt about it...you need a couple more boxes!  Very Happy

How about a pair of 1x4s at the base of the arch trellis, located at the entrance to your garden area?

That is a good idea to put in some 1x4 boxes but you may have noticed I live on a hill and need a fence so adding more boxes would mean to add more fence.  Tight on cash so perhaps look at putting some on the right side of the boxes.  Will have to do more measuring to see if it is feasible.

What size are these panels?

Jut a suggestion if you make a trellis out of PVC pipe. Use electrical PVC conduit. The sun won't bother it.

I used PVC a couple of years ago but never checked if it was electrical or not.  I thought the electric conduit was the metal so I checked.  All I can tell is it is schedule 40 but haven't noticed any damage do to the sun yet.
