I agree, GWN, raw carrots are the best.....unless it's a carrot cake. Nonna

Mountaineer winter squash ravioli. Most of them are frozen in preparation for Thanksgiving day.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Turan, where did you get your mountaineer squash seed? The variety sounds delicious and worth trying for our area, in that it appears to be more cold hardy. Is it a "dry-meat" kind of squash, or moist? Nonna

Nonna, I get the seeds from Judy Fisher of Fisher seeds. Her uncle Ken developed this squash. It is a short season hubbard, a good keeper with dense orange flesh. Not as sweet as a buttercup but tasty. It makes long vines and is quite rambunctious.
The Mountaineers are in the foreground.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Ooooh, beautiful squashes. Are those pale ones in rear Thelma Saunders acorn? If you do want to divest yourself of 3 or 4 seeds, I'd love to trade you some Potimarron (in Japan called Red Kuri) seeds, which are the best small baking squashes ever--taste somewhat like roasted chestnuts. Very smooth, dark orange flesh, and perfect for two to four serving portions, or 2 vegetable sides and a pumpkin pie! Nonna.PapaVino

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I would love to send you some seeds and get some Potimarron seeds! thanks.
The pale squash are Fisher's spaghetti squash. Ridiculously prolific. I am not as fond of the taste though but really should get used to it instead of pasta.....

Today will be lettuce, green onions and some snow peas! Not sure if they'll make it on to a plate, I usually just eat in the garden.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Earlier this week I was still able to harvest some spinach from under its covers. Now we have 15 inches of snow so I'm thinking the gardening is done for the year, but it was an awesome season for my new garden! I never have had fresh food this late in the year!
Tonight I'm planning on fixing my acorn squash for supper. I still have a couple zucchini left, but that's about it!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Going down to the teens tonight so made a homemade minestrone soup: braised pork chop, homegrown shallots, garlic, carrot, kale, roasted tomato liquor, dehydrated tomato and pepper, basil with store bought celery, beans, wine, pasta bits... waiting is difficult.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Last night's salad contained the last (so treated like a crown jewel) tomato from the pot of Bloody Butcher toms in the sunroom. Still getting chard and kale from outside, off and on, and I'm very stingy with the dozen or so nantes carrots in the garden (1/2 grated over a green salad a couple of times a week). Now that I know how wondermous a winter garden can be, will increase next year's to twice what we have this year!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
We are down to 2 leaf romaine lettuce plants that have not bolted, have picked the last of the white kohlrabi, the musculine( sp) mix lettuce is still going like crazy, still picking spinach leaves, the turnips and collards are still growing. The bell peppers are growing as are the other peppers( forgot what kind), the red kohlrabi never did make the 'bulb', the broccoli has small heads formed but probably won't make tonight's frost. All is good in the neighborhood

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Pepper - my purple kohlrabi have not headed either. What is this some type of Georgai weather related problem. My white kohlrabi are heading nicely and I have even picked a few. But the white kohlrabi is an early variety so I thought that was the difference.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I really do not know if it a weather issue or a late planting problem. I got them as transplants, it is probably a 'late fruiting' variety. This is my first year so I am making all maner of rookie mistakes. It did not help that I became very discouraged at the end of summer and really delayed planting my fall crop.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Got enough greens to put on lunch ham sandwichs
Loose leaf lettuce, deer tongue, chard, mizuna, radishes are done.
Endive, arugula, carrots, parsley still going. Minutina and claytonia growing.
Weird, salad in the middle of December in Iowa.
I would have had a lot more if I had planted earlier. Notes made for next year with !!!!
Watered just because I don't want the top to get dry with seeds going.
Now is is Feb yet so I can plant more lettuce

My kohlrabi never headed up either. I'm thinking I planted it too late. Things seem to take a lot longer here than is stated on the pkg or in Mels book.
