Hello,

This is my second year trying to garden, and I'm being educated by the plants as well as people here.  I've learned beets and radishes really don't like cauliflower or onions, but do OK with beans and mustard.

Onion tops are starting to fall over, but the bulbs are small: when is a vegetable done? The cauliflower is purple, but was supposed to be white.  Will I really get a loofah sponge? Slugs don't like ground eggshells.  Hares can chew through deer netting but not chicken wire.

All of which is elementary to many of you.  I'm surprised I actually go out there in the heat to patrol for weeds.  Anyhow, here's the vegetable patch:

It looks fantastic! And congratulations for learning the lessons that your garden is teaching you. It takes some folks a long time to figure out what to pay attention to.

What a great garden area and beautiful SFG boxes. I like your idea of the wire hoops instead of the PVC that we normally see. The garden can teach us much for those willing to pay attention.

I had to look at the photo a second time to see the wire hoops. They blend in so much better than the white PVC that I use. Beautiful garden.

4+ squares in Massachusetts Empty Hoops

Post  point 7/15/2013, 1:02 pm

I decided to splurge on the metal hoops because the PVC I had last year became brittle.  There is PVC for different uses, and maybe I bought what's meant to be underground.

I don't know if the PVC that I threaded the deer netting onto is UV-resistant either, but the fence is an experiment against deer, turkeys, coyotes, chipmunks...   I know, I know, some animals have warrens, deer leap, and turkeys can fly.

I had no idea what it takes to feed a family if one's the farmer.  My four squares aren't enough for us.  We don't mind vegetables that are not cosmetically perfect, because they're fresh and tasty, and also because of the time and patience this all takes.

It's beautiful - thank you for sharing your photo and your lessons learned - it's all about the process and what we learn along the way - that's the fun of it!
