happy hi Stopped by to say Hi to everyone, glad to see the worm tube post is still going and I see several of you have had success with your tube!

College has kept me busy, I'm loving the classical Guitar classes!  Nursing is coming along good too.

Good luck to all you worm tubers out there with your worms and your gardens!

HI Josh So Good to hear from you and glad to hear you're in college.  I'm up to 3 worm bins down in the basement.  You were my inspiration way back when..  Sometimes I still can't believe I own worms.  It was a real pleasure to grab all the fresh castings I wanted for this years garden.  Don't be a stranger!

The worms will now (in the dark) not be affected when you open the lid.
I used these flashlights to gather nightcrawlers for fishing.

Really good to hear from you, Josh.  We love it when you check in.

I used the worm tube idea this year and my worms survived 110 degree temps this summer in raised table tops and are thriving.  Every time I plant I disturb 3-4 worms at least.  I have 2 - 4 inches of mulch for insulation so the ground stays cool.  I love how simple it is.

Good luck and God bless!
Audrey

PS I just checked on my worm tubes and each one had 10 or more worms crawled all the way up to the top of the tubes.  There are thundershowers coming, would they be reacting to that and getting to "high ground?"  I've never seen them that high up in the tubes before.

Hahaha... so... I'm elbow deep in worm poop and smiling ear to ear and I realized - there's only one place I can tell people how cool it was and not have someone call the white coat people on me, LOL!

I needed to clean out my worm tubes today and each one (there are 5) were about 6-8 inches full of worm castings.  Lots of worms in them as well.  So I cleaned them out, put the castings to use and refilled their tubes with new food for my sweet pets.  Laughing Worm Tube for the SFG - Page 15 998388915

Worm Tube for the SFG - Page 15 Empty Thanks, Josh

Post  ETNRedClay 1/19/2014, 2:42 am

I would never have thought of adding worms to garden beds except I saw your post, Josh, from way way back and thought.... sounds simple and... fruitful... if it works.

So a little skeptical, I got my PVC, drilled my holes, planted the tube in my brand new SFG potato bed, 4'x8' and 12" to 18" tall because of the slope, and I dumped in 30 red wrigglers from Wal-Mart.  I would water the tube when I watered the bed, and I'd add some greens in there when I could see the bottom.

When I dug the potatoes, I didn't have 30 juvenile worms in the bed, I had 30 HUMONGOUS, GINORMOUS, MONSTER worms each garden fork full.  And the bed was so airy and fluffy compared to the control bed with no worms, that I could -- if I wasn't squeamish -- run my fingers into the mix and dig my potatoes that way.

Alas, shrieking and hopping around every time a worm touched my fingers attracted too much attention from concerned neighbors, so I stuck with the garden fork.

THANKS for the wonderful idea and post, I will be adding a tower to EVERY bed from now on.

That's awesome! It's so simple to do and I've had my worms survive and thrive in my raised beds and table top gardens in 3 months of 100 + temps and now down to overnight temps in the low 20s with the wood chip cover.

Worm Tube for the SFG - Page 15 Empty Re: Worm Tube for the SFG

Post  sanderson 3/14/2014, 1:44 am

This Topic is almost 4 years old and has pages and pages of replies.  I'm hoping those who have successful worm tubes will fine tune my questions from their actual worm tube experience.  I bought my worms today, about 1/2 lb.  I have 4 tubes ready.  Now is when I get a little nervous.

I will put a handful of moist compost at the bottom of each tube and add 1/4 of the worms to each and cap the top.

1.  When do I feed them for the first time?
2.  What should I feed them?  I see juicing residue, leafy greens as food.  What else?  I have corn meal and I can get Starbuck's.  What about pieces of squash, banana peels, apples, melons?
3.  How much should I feed?  One handful of mixed foods per week?
4.  White mold hyphae on the foods in the tube.  I got this stuff in my first tube last year.  Is this bad?  Should I add any shredded news paper or paper towels.  Wet them first or put them in dry?

I bought 25 worms a month or so ago and tried to keep them in the house.  I finally put the last 2 survivors in the old wet compost screenings (larger stuff that I screened out of my last batch of home made compost.

I do not want these new beauties to die!

Don't be nervous, they are quite forgiving.  I've had worm tubes.  Go ahead and moisten the compost layer, put in the worms, and put moistened food scraps on top.

1.  When do I feed them for the first time? Take a peek and see how fast the food is disappearing, in a week or so.  When you first put in the worms it may take them a couple weeks to settle in. After that initial period you'll probably see the need to add food more often.
2.  What should I feed them?  I see juicing residue, leafy greens as food.  Sure. What else? Potato peelings, mine loved moistened oatmeal, other cereal,  tea bags, old bread, crushed egg shells, too,  think of all your regular fruit and veggie compost items and feed your worms first. I have corn meal and I can get Starbuck's.  What about pieces of squash, banana peels, apples, melons? Yes to all of those.  Red worms are also called manure worms, so if you have access to  any aged herbivore animal manure, add that too. If you store up leaves and manure, those are some favorites, btw. Between that and food and veggie scraps you should get pretty massive worm herds in your tubes.  Worms are mostly little water bags. Be kind and mindful of this and keep things moist. See, iover all, it's pretty easy to add what you have on hand and moisten it.
3.  How much should I feed?  One handful of mixed foods per week?  Try that and see. They will simply show you. Take a look. If the food has gone down or is missing, add more moist food.  And in general, try to keep a moist environment.
4.  White mold hyphae on the foods in the tube.  I got this stuff in my first tube last year.  Is this bad? Nope. Should I add any shredded news paper or paper towels.  Certainly.  But I wouldn't use paper towels that were used to wipe up any harsh chemicals, no.  And I wouldn't use slick shiny newspaper print either, just the black and white stuff. That will sometimes have color too but I use it with no problems.  Paper items....Wet them first or put them in dry? Wet.  Worms optimum environment is moist.

I bought 25 worms a month or so ago and tried to keep them in the house.  I finally put the last 2 survivors in the old wet compost screenings (larger stuff that I screened out of my last batch of home made compost.

Post  audrey.jeanne.roberts 3/14/2014, 4:03 pm

Feeding my worm tubes seems to be about every other week to once a month time schedule. When the food is mostly gone I replace it.

I think it's less than it might be for others because of the wood chip and natural garden waste layer (dried leaves, plants I pull up that aren't diseased I just tear in pieces and leave on top to break down naturally) I have on my boxes so they're getting plenty to eat.

I understand that they don't like citrus or onion so I take that out of my kitchen waste and throw it into the compost pile.

Have fun with them!

Worm tubes are in. Handful of HM compost, handful of worms in their native compost, handful of moist lunch of mixed chopped kale, carrot, squash, WW bread, and cornmeal and tea leaves.

Fingers crossed.

It's so easy, you'll love it.  I have to let my food go down in the tubes and then clean out the castings as it's been about 6 months.  Just in time to use them on my growing garden  Very Happy

I was looking in there this week and there were tons of teeny tiny baby worms that were white, they hadn't even turned red yet.  Every time I move my mulch to plant, I see several worms in the planting hole.

Fascinating! Now I have to wait for morning to go look at them again and try to figure out what I fed them last - actually it might have been that I overfed them before I left on a trip to my parents where I didn't know when I was going to be able to come home (my dad had a quad bypass operation)

The more I think about it, I bet that's it.

Is wet fresh horse manure okay for composting worms. I put little wet pieces in the worm tubes and the next day I saw more worms crawling around. Do they really like coffee grounds that much?

Wow, I'm surprised they're wet. I got a huge tub of fresh horse manure every day for maybe half a year last year and hardly any of it was ever wet. Only at the very bottom of the tub, and never any liquid even under the pressure of the other hundred pounds of poop.

These were in my compost pile so they were very moist, almost to the point of falling apart. I added some water in the tubes to keep them moist. Normally horse manure has so much fiber that they dry out when spread so fly eggs won't survive. Usually, it's not until it is stockpiled and rained on that it will support the fly life cycle.

Aged horse manure is ideal for both a food source and bedding for worms.  Fresh may still contain dewormer meds.

Coffee grounds is a good food source too.  Large amounts become hot so the worms will tend to move away from it then come back when it cools down.

I am getting organised to make myself a DIY 3 layer worm compost farm, once that is up an running I think I'll add worm tubes to my SFGs...looks so easy it would almost be silly not to!
