I grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, it was easier for me to just purchase what I wanted from the farmers that lived in Blend (the farming area outside of town). We have lived in Eagle River for 8 years now. I got Mel's original book a couple of years ago, but have been unsure of starting a garden here. I have finally decided to try and after finding Mel's updated book (just purchased the new one on Kindle) ad this forum, I'm ready to try a garden here. We still have a foot of snow where I want to put our garden and we will probably get a few more snowfalls before the winter here is done. I'm looking at the end of May before we can build our garden area. I just want to grow some of the items that I love to can and some salad greens.

I am excited about this forum and all the help that is here.

Wow...Alaska!! Welcome to the forum! Are you a military family? We are into our second year of SFGing and really enjoy it. You can find all kinds of great info on here and everyone is very nice and helpful. When you have the chance go to the home page to check out who else may be in your region. If you ever have any questions on gardening, this is the place to come to.

Renee glad you\'re here

Thanks Renee,

Yes, my husband is retired military. He had his last assignment here and we decided to stay. I am so glad I found this site, it has so much information!

I can hardly wait to get started.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I grew up in Anchorage, AK and my paternal grandparents also live there and had a nice traditional garden every summer. My maternal grandparents also kept a nice garden and they lived in Eagle River like you! You can grow huge cabbages and other cool weather crops all through the summer. Hope to hear from you again when the snow melts and you get going!

glad you\'re here

My brother used to live in Eagle River! He was with the AWAC unit and is now retired. He would LOVE to go back there some day.

Kim

Hello from Eagle River Alaska! Empty Thanks!

Thanks for the Welcome! Surprising how many people have ties to AK. We really love it and I am hoping to get started soon on our new garden. The weather however isn't cooperating right now. We just got 6 inches of snow and it is still coming down. Oh well I can finish Mel's new book and then get started with planting seeds indoors for the plants I will transplant. cheers
