Nice carrot!

I just realized I have a volunteer (of sorts)...I apparently dropped a carrot seed outside the raised bed, in the gravel surrounding it (and horrible Las Vegas soil)...

He doesnt seem to care though, so come Thursday, he comes out with his siblings!

You will definitely have to post a picture of that one! It will sure be interesting to see the shape it grew into since it grew in gravel, wow!

Here are my carrots. I planted 2 squares per week beginning 2/10/13. I also planted some carrots in carrot week but they were struggling so I pulled them and planted okra.
Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 Carrot10
We began slowly harvesting the carrots last week. They are still small but my grandon loves to pull them and eat them right in the garden.

Here is my 1x2 box of carrots - the only survivors after the kitten pounced all over the box when it was still indoors. I originally had 100% germination in the 2 sq ft, 32 carrots. They were just no match for kittenhood glee!

For anyone who is still getting the 1/2 size posts, here is the pic again. I can only post full size posts after a full size post. If it is a halfy, my pics still get cut.

SFG forums....Shall I begin???

Couldn't be bothered to wait until Thursday...plus, with the week of 105+ that we just had, I was concerned about the effects on the carrots...

Fresh picked!
Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 9016989755_fe74267576_c

Trimmed and washed!
Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 9018181010_2a603dac93_c

Had a forker or two, but overall terrific condition! No bug holes, grub holes, or anything. They were rather small in my opinion, but I can lay the blame for that on my tomatoes, and honestly, the carrots were planted to companion the tomatoes, knowing they could get stunted.

The bent carrot in the upper right is "Spare-ot", the volunteer from the gravel and terrible Las Vegas soil.

And just for the record, these were all Touchon heirlooms. I will plant these again in fall, ideally when I do the onions (Red Torpedoes), garlic (Red Inchelium), and some Dragon carrots as well! Without any tomatoes, maybe they'll do better. Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 370856013 Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 998388915

All of you are doing so good with your carrots and they are beautiful!

Brainchasm that carrot did quite well for growing in the gravel.

My carrots only got the first little straight leaves, not even a hint of the fluffy leaves, hung on for weeks and then died. I should have asked for advice.

It's a bit of a misnomer...tomatoes love having carrots around, but carrots pay for it, by being stunted.

I'm not positive but, after looking at Donna's photo, I still might be in the Carrot Week running with 1 remaining Rainbow carrot.   But I'm not sure if it's carrot or Queen Anne Lace.  And the photo thingy won't let me load the pic. Sooo...maybe tomorrow.

Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 Empty A bit late... but Dark Knight Carrot Seeds are available again.

Post  Windmere 6/18/2013, 12:38 pm

Hello all,

When carrot week got started, I really wanted to plant some Dark Knight Carrot Seeds.  At the time, they were only available on Amazon for over $14.00.

I just wanted to tell everyone that it is now easier to find Dark Knight Carrot seeds.  I know this is too late for this year's Carrot Week event, but perhaps the seeds could be saved for next year.

Amazon has them here:

http://www.amazon.com/Black-Knight-Carrot-100-Seeds/dp/B001OK619Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1I5LTXFN5N6F8&coliid=I1C3I9YY6EDAWM

eBay has them here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Knight-Carrot-30-seeds-/271223053607?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f26275d27

Both of the above sources are from the U.S.

Yesterday, I saw two other eBay sources.  They came directly from Turkey, and they were very economical.  They are now gone.  I wonder if they were removed due to the current political situation in Turkey.

Wow, beautiful carrots so far guys!  Im working FT now so havent had much time to post lately.  Took a pic of my carrots today.  The groundhog living in my barn ate some of my carrot leaves, but the carrots themselves seem fine.  Right 4 squares are my carrot week squares.

My Carrot Week square, planted April 17, has really taken off!  Now I'm worried that they'll bolt and jeopardize my harvest.  Can these carrots be saved?

Carrot Week 2013 - Page 11 100_0268

Those are potatoes in the background, some of which have just about finished blooming.

Here's another shot of the carrots:

The darned program keeps copying the same photo....
