The voles have been scarfing up on my carrot patch. I didn't discover the invasion because I had them under a row cover for shade. I noticed mix that was tossed out of the box and found that they had gobbled all 9 squares:x Mad Mad they ate them, tops and all!!!! I went on the assault: I put out mouse traps baited with peanut butter and the vole body count is up to twelve, with more to follow.

So far I only have nantes carrots and a couple yellow ones big enough to pull.  I think the others are going to take their sweet long time.  I want to post a rainbow of carrots..... but can not so far.  But today I get to take fresh pulled carrots (orange) for a work snack!

I find comfort in knowing Im not the only one who lost a carrot patch to critters.  My cat kills moles, but not groundhogs.

Pulled some of my carrots their looking much better now and are edible. I doubled their watering scheduled and they plumped right up and got crunchy instead of being like chewing on a stick.

I am so excited....thanks to Mel's mix I've grown carrots!!!!!!!!!!
I've tried to grow them many times before but never had success. I thought it would be fun to try them in my new SFG this year. I planted the seeds early May and have been watching them closely. Beautiful greens above ground but no carrots below. I gave up and ignored them for a while, then this morning I checked on them.....I got to do the happy carrot dance!!!!!

Sorry so long in responding, just saw this. We diced them all up and roasted them, so I can't really say how they tasted compared to the others? We probably thought they were a "beet" since we roasted them with so many other veggies Smile

I pulled a few of my rainbows yesterday. The largest yellow one is about 8" long. Tops are 4 times that! I didn't thin them out very well, but they seem to be fine. Tasted REAL good, even fresh out of the garden. We had one of each color sliced in our salad tonight (a little lettuce with our carrots). These are Burpee's Kaleidoscope Mix.

Carrot Week 2013 - Page 13 01rain10

They look even prettier sliced! I did not peel them, just scrubbed them real good.

All of my carrot week carrots nante's and rainbows have been dismal so far. I pulled a few for tonight's evening meal and they were only about 1/2" thick max and as long as a  size 8 knitting needle.. ( and as hard ) it must be down to the four week drought conditions we had a few weeks back .
I've had them on an auto watering regime since they were sown but they took an aeon to get sprouting on their own .
Several have also bolted with the  greenery reaching almost 30 inches high

Late crop carrots sown a few days later in a germinated state suspended in thin seaweed jelly have fared better giving a good inch in diameter root so far.

Post  Icemaiden 8/11/2013, 11:01 am

Finally my carrots!
The summer was pretty dreadful for carrots (and most things). I sowed two squares in carrot week and they germinated rather patchily, and are finally making nice carrots now. Then I sowed carrots at the usual time and they were very slow to germinate because of cold wet weather. And a new neighbour arrived complete with cat which proceeded use  my box as a toilet :-( and dug up almost all my seedling carrots in the process.
Luckily for me the carrot week ones escaped and here are the first ones to be pulled. Carrot salad tonight!

Absolutely beautiful carrots everyone!  Mine didn't make it but I have an authentic MM bed now so I really should see if I can grow carrots in it before winter sets in, if there is time.  My other beds are made the old way.

Sowed 4-2-13.  Sprouted 4-9.  Today 8-15-13.  I finally see a little orange when I move aside the MM.  I had no idea they would take this long.  Can I sow some more seeds now for fall/winter?  Zone 9, First frost around Nov 15.

You inspired me to go out and pull my slow growing Purple Suns and the later planted Rainbow mix.

These colored carrots are fun to grow but so far are not as productive as the Nantes and Danvers.

Thanks a bunch everyone.
Turan I agree that other carrots grow better.
From my limited observation tweaking genetics for other colors besides orange weakens the vigorous growth factor.
