Re: Carrot Week 2013
I've got 3 top hat boxes of carrot seedlings (scarlet nantes and sweetness hybrid II). 2 boxes have all sprouted and I will need to thin many of them, another box seems to only have a few sprouts and keeps drying out faster (it gets more sun than the others). What are the chances of transplanting some of my excess from the other boxes to the one with only a few sprouts?
I got a wonderful 12" carrot from one of these varieties this winter, but hadn't labeled them so am not sure which one. I have labeled these boxes and am hoping for another beauty this summer if the weather doesn't get too crazy.

Re: Carrot Week 2013
Had to move my box of Carrot Week carrots outside earlier than I had hoped, because the new RAMBUNCTIOUS kitten found it, and even led astray my older cat who knows better! Not sure how many seedlings will survive, but the whole thing is for fun anyway, right? Last week I was able to get my regular carrot crop in the ground, so hopefully I will end up with come carrots from somewhere in the garden!

Lemonie ,
Perhaps try wrapping some plastic sheet like clingfilm round the top hat boxes three or four times to slow down the evaportation losses through the wooden sides

I finally see carrots germinating. My Cosmic Purples sown 4-14 are finally popping. They take longer in the north.

Glad to see it isn't only me. I am in Northern Maine, carrots always give me fits because they take so much longer to pop up and i go crazy looking for them to come up . Patience is not always my first virtue.
Re: Carrot Week 2013
My Carrot Week carrots are coming up and starting to look like carrots as well. However, after the kitten tromped through the box several times before weather allowed it (box, not kitten) to go outside, out of the 2 sq ft I have maybe 10 carrot sprouts. I will give them another few weeks to pop up, then I am going to start filling in with either more carrot seeds or something else to go with the current growing selection!

Re: Carrot Week 2013
My carrots taken on Friday. I thinned them out and weeded a bit. Stupid maple trees keep dropping their helicopter seeds in my beds. My carrot week carrots are on the right. I just went outside to check on them and I think they have doubled in size from all the rain we've had!

Thanks Plantoid! Now why didn't I think of this? I think I've got some leftover 4mil plastic I can use.
So, any thoughts on success of transplanting my over seeded to my non-seeded areas? I've had a bad infestation of pill bugs and slugs in these boxes (they must like the decaying wood) and they have actually be feasting on some of my seedlings. So I would like to spread out what I have, if possible, as I think we are going to have too hot of a summer to get another planting of carrots in (supposed to be 90*F today).

Re: Carrot Week 2013
I've had great success using a nematode slug killer , they eat the slugs and breed in the dead remains of slugs and are totally harmless to humans as they already exist in the soil but not in large numbers.
Transplanting carrots is not normall a viable idea as they grow forked roots ... if they grow at all.
Best let them all grow so that the majority are big enough to harvest and harvest all at once so you don't encourage carrot fly attack by "thinning them out " .
Learn from your mistakes , write them down in a journal so you don't forget.

Re: Carrot Week 2013
to me that looks like slugs that live very close to the carrot under the mulch or in the top of the soil .
Any evidence of slug slime using a torch at night to see if it shines a thin slime trail etc.
That's not to say you may have other bugs or birds that like baby carrot tops as well

I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

Excellent! I think you've got the first harvested carrot there. Did you plant these carrots during Carrot Week? Do you have any other colors?

I planted two squares of Touchon heirloom carrots on March 3rd, same day I planted most of that bed.RoOsTeR wrote:Excellent! I think you've got the first harvested carrot there. Did you plant these carrots during Carrot Week? Do you have any other colors?
These were grown with the minor hope of decent carrots, but the major hope of helping my tomatoes.
I only have the orange Touchons, but I do plan on doing some Dragons this fall.
(my garden is heirloom-only, so my selection is limited...which is a bit of a shame, since the blue carrots look COOL!)

I think my Carrot Week carrot box needs some trimming .
I wish they'd hurry up! I'm ready to see some purple carrots
How are all the Carrot Week carrots doing out there?

Re: Carrot Week 2013
Going slooooooooowwwwly. I planted 3 squares each different~ Nantes (the control), Purple Sun and Rainbow blend. I planted another 3 squares a couple weeks later. Both times the Purple Sun came up much later than the others. Any one else notice this?
Today I am going to plant the final squares available in that bed with Purple Sun and Rainbow blend. Maybe the purples like warmer weather to sprout?

Re: Carrot Week 2013
well, well, well......you know how I have complained about not being able to grow carrots and how our son plants the seeds each year and they don't do much.....
even now he replanted some more seeds in his self watering container with MM and still no sign of them.....he is always disappointed each year with what comes of our carrots.....no big ones
well....look what grew .....as a VOLUNTEER....in the green house
(now mind you we did sow seeds in this area last fall but nothing came up)
our son came home from school today and took a peek to see if it was really a carrot under the wood chips....
sure enough.....it was a carrot....its in his tummy now .....he was soooo excited to pull a BIG carrot....ahhh
happy gardening
