Thanks, folks! I covered with a few inches of compost, and since I don't have anything for mulch except pine needles or seaweed, I then covered with seaweed:

I know it's not nice and even but I was in a hurry to get back to work so I was just dumping everything on from 5 gal buckets. I don't think the asparagus will be embarrassed, do you?

Is it OK for asparagus to fall over early? Mine are all down & bent at ground level due to wind. Do they need to be up for any reason?

Are these tiny stalks that have grown into fern-like plants? If so, I wouldn't worry.

When they really die down and turn brown in the fall, just snip them. Also, are the first-year plants?

They are 2nd yr plants about 6ft tall now. This photo is from yesterday. Today all of them are over due to weather: Asparagus - Page 9 02212

Some of them are badly bent almost to detachment. Will they be OK?

As I understand it, the whole idea of letting asparagus get tall and fern is to let the stalks collect the sun's energy for next Spring's bountiful growth.
I saved mine from blowing over. Used regular tomato size wooden stakes all throughout the bed and ran rope around them. This gave them pretty good security about a foot tall height. But then I had 60 mph winds this spring. So I added one more type of protection. I ran 4 ft tall green metal posts around the outside of the bed and clamped tarps to it. It formed a great wall of protection. The winds were fierce but the asparagus stalks did really well and they are now all of 7 ft tall. Didn't lose any. Was I obsessive?
Oh yes. But it worked.

I don't snip my asparagus ferns in the fall. I leave them to winter over so the roots can gain all the energy from the plants that are available thru the winter.
In the spring there will be little left of the plant on the surface, but what's there I cut back to the ground to level off the bed, add 2" of compost and make sure to water the bed well thru the early and mid-spring.
The asparagus is stronger if left thru to die back itself in the winter.
