Tomato seedlings? Empty Tomato seedlings?

Post  greenmom 4/26/2012, 12:01 pm

On St. Patrick's Day, I planted some lettuce transplants into organic potting soil (This was before I officially started my SFG so please excuse the lack of Mel's Mix). I know that my kids and neighbor kids were playing outside near where I was working, and I had a few open pouches of seeds in my supplies. About a week later, I noticed about a hundred little seedlings coming up in my sterile, store-bought soil. They were all the same, so I surmised that the kids had gotten into my seeds while I stepped away and "helped" by sprinkling them into my planters. No one will claim responsibility, but I am still suspicious. So, as not to waste, I carefully removed and replanted about six seedlings and have been carefully cultivating them since. They are doing well and now have true leaves. I believe they are cherry tomatoes, based on their appearance and the seed pouches that were open. However, they don't have that tomato smell. Does anyone know if tomatoes smell when they are so young, or am I wasting my time? I don't think they are weeds, because like I said, the soil was sterile. And although they are outside, not all of my planters have them. Help! I am very new at growing from seeds and would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I don't notice a tomato smell with seedlings. Do they have the tiny "hairs" along the stem?

Tomato plants do indeed have a distinctive smell, but they do not smell like tomato fruit. If you post a photo, we may be able to help.
