Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
But, it needs to be remembered that all of our northern planted garlic takes a 4-5 month nap, unlike sanderson's garlic. So our timetable is not relevant. I have found that I can plant garlic in early April and it will have enough cold temperatures to bulb properly and be pulled in August. Translating timetable to sanderson planting in November her garlic should be ready to pull now, which is what it looks like, but seems not all made bulbs.
Did you give them a cold period in the fridge like you would for tulips?

She is planting soft neck. Very different, sanderson, do you have any experience with this plant?

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
Here's my history of garlic growing. And no, the garlic arrived so late that it went right into the ground. I think for this Oct 2018, I will buy some from the grocery (most are soft neck) and wrap in paper towels and put in the frig for a couple of weeks. Unless this batch actually turns out decent.
2013 Planted cloves in March.
2014 Planted fall of 2013.
2015 Planted fall of 2014. I think I bought to ones on the right - hard necks, which don't do well in southern lats.
The garlic festival is held in August which makes me think the garlic was harvest in July. ??? https://gilroygarlicfestival.com/

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
I was thinking about your garlic during the night, Sanderson. Seems to me that you should let it do it's thing without interference. It looks healthy and on the verge of finishing. I always wait for 5 dead bottom leaves before pulling. And it takes weeks for that to occur here starting from the first dead leaf. So maybe your garlics will all bulb up by 5 dead leaves. But since I know nada about your area or the soft necks, take that with a grain of salt.
Looks like you have enough to experiment with in a few different ways. Also, maybe you could call the supplier for help if need be.

CC, Let's see. YOU were thinking about MY garlic during the night. Yep, that sounds about right for us.

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
I harvested one of the larger garlic yesterday. I think it needed a few more days. The leaves are dying off but now I think it is due to not enough water for a few days.
Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
I agree that looks like it needs longer - but I also thought you were supposed to stop watering garlic a few weeks before harvest...?sanderson wrote:I harvested one of the larger garlic yesterday. Maybe the correct words are cut back on watering.
Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
Good looking plant, sanderson, just didn’t bulb up enough! Another couple weeks?

Harvested 2' x 4' bed today. Some are splitting, some are great and some are small. This is a 2' x 4' on wheels, yet the Mel's Mix was loaded with worms! Built it and they will come.
Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
I use TONS of garlic but have never had much luck growing it.

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
You are probably in the "hard neck" garlic zone. This is the first time my garlic had a bed where they could stay in as long as they needed.
....garlic grow?...
Thanks for the tip. I'll do some research and see how it goes.sanderson wrote:You are probably in the "hard neck" garlic zone. This is the first time my garlic had a bed where they could stay in as long as they needed.

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
Yeah, plant hardneck, ispinwool. Pinetree has a great German variety they sell in the Fall, I highly recommend it. It truly can take the weather, gives you scapes, (YUM), and is a nice garlicky flavor, not ridiculously bitey like some homegrown varieties can be like!ispinwool wrote:I use TONS of garlic but have never had much luck growing it.

Here's a photo; they're delicious chopped and added to salads, soups, sautees, and egg dishes.

I'm seeing my first scapes of the season--about two weeks earlier than usual. I hope the bulbs have time to get larger!

What has your spring been like, Donna? Here, we are a bit behind, but not much really...donnainzone5 wrote:I'm seeing my first scapes of the season--about two weeks earlier than usual. I hope the bulbs have time to get larger!

Scorpio,
Temps here have had their ups and downs all spring!
Last month, however, was officially about 8F above the norm.
On May 30, however, my own low was 28. This morning, 46. Does that give you any idea?
