root eating worms, fulsarium wilt and other garden disasters

I heard from my Philippine friends today and they have been infested with a small grub like worm that eats the roots of plants. All the beds are heavily infested. All seedling put out his year are gone and the beds are squirming with the worms. The local organic gardener was devastated for them because he say they can't be controlled organically. Recommended kerosene and fire and not being able to use the beds until next year.

However, in searching for possible answers I came across this article;

and some other articles on solarizing soil to kill pests. You would lose a year, but our contained bed are well set up if one gets an infestation.

Hey Walshevak,

Were they able to share the type of grub or a pic perhaps?

How many beds do they have? Would it be feasible to go in by hand and remove them or is their project too big for that?

When I turn my beds over early spring (technically winter actually as I do it around now), I find overwintered grubs in them just waiting for yummy spring roots and throw them out. They chewed through some of my plants last year and it took me a while to figure out what was going on but this year I will be grub free (until the next batch lays of course)

Hopefully a picture tomorrow. All four beds are heavily infested and sifting the soil is not an option at this point. The surrounding local soil is also infested. And remember, these are not like our SFGs. They are local soil, and compost made on top of local soil, rice hulls, and quartz rock dust. I sent a box of stuff to them last summer and cushioned it with vermiculite, so there is a small amount of that.

Here is a link to get rid of grubs. I guess if might depend on the type of grub, but there a several organic ways to help.

How sad. Hopefully they will be able to overcome this devastating threat to their garden.
