Community Gardens just started last year in Hamilton, Ohio (yes, I'm a Hamiltuckian by birth LOL - inside joke of the town is that it was founded by Kentucky transplants). I found that they have a facebook page. Look at the pics. CHICKEN WIRE!! It would definitely deter those little critters from digging up much including my greyhound, who I've already had problems with , just with empty boxes at the moment.

the only problem I see is that some plant stalks can get as larger as the 1" gauge holes.

Check it out and give me some feedback, please

I'm very, very impressed! Gorgeous pictures! Did the City sponsor this? How many sfgs were there?

As for the chicken wire, could you cut some holes bigger for the larger crops? I think it is a great idea and could protect a lot.

I'm thinking they are sponsored by the city but I was actually looking for the gardens sponsored by Butler Co ext office. Did you see Kenton Co, Ky ext office website. They have their 2012 schedule up and I'm seriously thinking of taking some classes down there. Hamilton Co, Butler Co, Preble Co and Warren Co offices don't have anything listed as of yet. OSU is way behind UK!! LOL

Must have lots of Squirrels!

Great looking gardens!

I have squirrels and they have not dug in the dirt here. They might eat off some veggies?

I put a 2.5 ft. fence around my garden area to keep out the dog(lab) The fence hole size is smaller at the bottom(to keep out rabbits) and larger at top, for veggies to hang on to.

I guess you could put rabbit wire on the soil, but, how are you to plant? How are you to dig root crops or re-plant? It would really be a pain for SFG, each square with its own wire?

Kim,

Don't forget the Boone County Extension down in Burlington, KY. It's really easy to get to and they have their schedule posted as well. They have a nice farmers market on weekends there as well.

Loved all the pictures. What a lovely job they did with those gardens for their community! First time I've seen someone using the vinyl mini-blind slats for their grid like Mel suggested in his book (not that others haven't done so, just first time I've seen it since joining here). The straw bale gardens were cool too.

As far as whether the chicken wire grids are a good idea or not, the only problem I can think of is how to clean out individual squares for re-planting. Not a problem for a single season garden, where you can wait until everything is spent and then cut everything down and lift the wire and the grid and clean out the roots and add compost. But for a single box garden like mine, where I will have summer crops still going when the spring ones need to be cleaned up for fall crops for instance... well, you get the point.

I agree with ya on all the pros and cons. It wouldn't work on some of my beds also.

The indeterminate tomatoes I plant would be girdled by that chicken wire. Though I've seen some SFG beds with chicken wire on top, I have to ask: how do you weed?

Kim,

I use 3/4" PVC and make boxes, then cover with plastic mesh. There're lightweight and you can move from box to box.

For the 3-way PVC connectors (I couldn't find them locally), I purchased on-line from PVCFittings.com. Good price and service.

My first built covers are 5 years old and still like new. When not in use, I hang them on my fence.

I have an image, but as I'm new here, I'm still trying to figure out how to include a pic. I did get in my gallery.

Here you go RRSmith:

There's a thread on how to do things on the forum. Posting pictures isn't intuitive, so it's explained in there. You'll see it on the home page, second from the top right under the Welcome Mat. Your garden looks wonderful and lush! I'm glad you joined us here.

I'll check out the instructions.

Thanks for the garden compliment. Actually, that’s just a small corner of the garden. We've got about 32 SFG boxes of different sizes and shapes; I'll upload some more images in my gallery.

I've uploaded images of a large portion of the garden to my personal gallery. I think you can access that (I'm new to the forum and learning).

Some boxes are smaller some larger. It is heaven at times, but then sometimes it seems the reverse. Matter not, I love every minute of it.
