New Gardens in Midland

Hi y'all! We just bought a house and am plotting out what to do with the gardens. The lawn is itty bitty and will be overrun by small children, so I'm planning on strictly doing containers. We have a HUGE covered back porch, and about 4-foot sections on each side of the house that will have limited frying time each day during the summer. We have plenty of room to move the plants indoor (garages) if it's too cold. The biggest beds I will probably do will be 2x2. I plan on making them out in the woodshop.

I've been drooling over some of the heirloom seed catalogs and trying to figure out what might be heat/drought resistant and will work in a container. I'm also looking at my herbals and trying to decide what herbs I'd like to plant. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum! Suggestions? If you are planning on possibly moving them around, it is easy to make the boxes with a bottom (with appropriate drain holes) and put casters on the bottom. Instant mobile gardens! Have fun designing and building!

I do plan to put bottoms on them, but casters might not work with the drop from the patio or going through the lawn...

Definitely an issue! I forget that not everyone has concrete within inches of their gardens! Shocked

Maybe handles on the sides, or putting legs on them (even little stubby ones) to make them easy to get under to lift? (Not to mention making them non-yucky underneath by not having them sit directly on the ground - sorry to get girlie on you!) Just thinking about the moving part, since you mentioned they will possibly travel to the garage!

You have given me ideas for my herb bed - the only part of my garden not converted to SFG. If I do little legged boxes I could make it not only mobile, but multi-level. thanks

I'm actually planning to measure the front flowerbeds and see if I can make boxes that will hide down in them instead of planting directly in them. Easier to rearrange any times want to!
