Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
Hi Stacie - Unfortunately I'm new and have the same little bugs and white slivers on my brandywine. I have three other tomato plants which are not potato leaf in the same box and they don't appear to attract these like the brandywine is??? I am going to link over to your post as your video shows them more clearly than my picture.

Some good ideas here!
Good luck with the whiteflies. I hear that the yellow cards with Tanglefoot on them work really well!

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
Camprn - forgive my stupid question because I'm totally inexperienced, but are "whiteflies" a purplish-red color? That's the color of my bugs - the little white specs look like little white slivers of sawdust - not sure if they are eggs/larvae??? Maybe the white specs are whiteflies and the purplish-red things are something different???

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
My tomatoes are covered with the white things on the top of the leaves and red mites under neath. I've tried soap insecticide and an organic powder. May have to resort to sevin dust, but I was really trying to go organic this year.

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
Hi Pam - I had another thread asking about these same bugs that Stacie has. One member responded:
"Aphids come in several colors, I have the white and red varieties on my tomatoes.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=aphids&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1277&bih=752
They seem to suck water from the leaves, and leave a sticky substance...
I use Neem Oil spray (organic). I spray at dusk to keep from bothering the bees."

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
Good info. I thought that they were some kind of aphids but had no idea what to do about them. When using the soap method what do you do? What about using homemade soap that I buy from the Amish? Also, if that doesn't work where do you buy Neem Oil? I've never heard of it. I am familiar to Seven - my brother is dangerously allergic to something in that stuff. Thanks to all for the help and info.

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
Stacie - I'm not much help but I did find Neem Oil extract at Lowes
Lowes Garden Safe Neem Oil
It's supposedly a natural insecticide. Many of the forum members try to avoid Sevin because it's so harmful to the good bugs and the environment, especially bees. If you search the forum for "neem" or for "soap spray", I'm sure you'll find much more info.

Scroll down a little to "Attack of the Aphids".
She recommends Take Down Pyrethrin Garden Spray. She says it's organic, but I can't find anything about that on the label information.

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
Pyrethrin is kind of a grey area in being organic. Some call it organic some say it is not. A mix of orange oil, soap and water will also kill aphids. I think it is 1 or 2 Tbs of orange oil to a gallon of spray. Just do any spraying of organic insecticide for aphids in the evening as to not kill the pollinators. Also after you get rid of the aphids try to attact or buy lady bugs they love aphids.

Sorry, I could see the white and not much else. Do you still have the buggers? Is there any way for a clearer photo of the bugs?
do they look like mealy bugs?
or do they look like aphids?
or do they look like white flies?

I have the SAME PROBLEM in ATLANTA - PLEASE READ!!
This is my first year growing HEIRLOOM tomatoes (17 different varieties) and this is the first year I have experienced this problem. I called the garden where I purchased all of my ORGANIC plants from and spoke with the Head Gardener and described my leaf curling and bugs attached to them and she first said it was WHITE FLIES!!!! Just shake your plants and you will see them fly away. Also you will see a white substance on the back of the leaf. The reason we are getting these bugs is because we didn't have a 2nd hard frost in the south this year, and the bugs are at their peak laying season. This is what you are seeing, all of the eggs that have hatched and need food. At her recommendation, I tried a soapy solution, using DR. BRONNERS liquid soap solution everyday for 3 days - didn't work!! Either the essential oils weren't strong enough or it was too late the damage had been done. Even several of my okra and pepper plants had been damaged also. My tomato leaves started curling very tightly on the new growth and I really needed to step it up or they all were going to be lost. YOU MUST GET RID OF THEM or you will have alot of damage to your tomato plants!! After this I started getting a few MEALY BUGS which will cover the stem with alot of eggs. My attitude is "Either the BUGS or my TOMATO Plants gotta go" and you know having investing in 17 different plants/ and 3 raised beds of veggies - the BUGS gotta go! So, I stepped up my game and went to LIQUID SEVEN. I made the decision when making my initial batch that I would have to apply/spray ALL of my 3 raised beds completedly saturating them. It took 2 days for me to notice that not a bug was on any of my plants. As of today, I am happy to say that my tomato plants are recovering with only 1 application. It is going to rain here tonight/tomorrow so another application will be applied. But I know that I must keep it up! Keep your chin up, we can defeat these bugs - cause we gotta have FRIED GREEN TOMATOES this summer (Smile).

I am glad you have gotten ahead of the pests! I am compelled to step in and make a statement about SEVIN, which is a highly effective insecticide, but PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE LABEL and follow all instructions. SEVIN is HIGHLY toxic to insects, this includes the pollinating insects and the good, predatory insects we all rely upon in the garden. You can read more about it Pesticide Database

Re: How do I get rid of the tiny bugs covering my tomato plants?
I didn't use Sevin, but instead sprayed with Pyrethrin, which i think is organic. Anyway, I've probably killed my tomatoes by putting too much stuff on them over the past 10 days. The leaves are curling and they just don't look happy. We'll see what happens tomorrow. It's supposed to rain tonight and we're headed out of town for a week. May have to replant... : -(
