Most of my garden is finished! Icon_sad I KNOW! I pledged in another thread I would not complain about my gardening zone again but DAGNABBIT, everything I didn't cover last night is black and drooping, except for the radishes. It went to -3C overnight and at 7 am this morning was still -3C. I don't know if it will warm up enough to get the covers off the tomatoes before I have to leave for work.

AND the forecast for this week is a dirty four letter word beginning with "s" that I refuse to have in my vocabulary at this time of year. Guess I will be digging potatoes and winterizing the garden on my days off.

I am so glad this didn't happen while I was away and I got to see things still growing and healthy for a couple of days. What a wonderful way to come home.

Howdy Old Hippie:

Well our weather is cool and dry with night time temps in the mid-'60's F. The watermellon are done. Most of the maters have been pulled out (some still produceing) the SVB got another squash plant leaving only one plant still in production. Cole crops have been planted and doing well. The strawberries are now entering their dorment stages with some showing lack of moisture stress as much as I try to keep them wateed.

All in all a sucessful year in the garden with the taters waiting to be harvested and a few peppers still producing. -3C allready? Humm, there is still enough room in Florida for one more snow bird. Smile

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Aw, Old Hippie. That stinks. I see that one night this week we are to expect a low of 49...and I still have maters coming in, ack. (May have to read up on green mater recipes.) And I went out this morning and saw another new triffid face....

100 Rampicante? You could feed the world. How many acres do you have?

This is what I call Rampicante Face. It's the end of a branch... big feelers, leaves, a few fruit...

Oh, and Old Hippie, sorry, I didn't mean to divert your thread. I am really curious to see how my plants stand up to the cooling temps. I grew up in Northern New England myself, and on a farm there, but it's been a long long while. I just hope my limas fatten up a bit more.

LOL! No problem Megan.

I love the look of your squash or whatever it is that is growing there. Wish my DH ate squash and zuccini. I like both and would love to learn new ways to cook them. He did eat corn on the cob yesterday for the first time in the 39 years we have been married so maybe there is hope yet.

Wow, congrats! Corn was such a staple growing up that I can't imagine not eating it at least once in a while. (And potatoes were a given.) Glad he tried something new!

The squash is called rampicante, it's a type of zucchini except it can be used both as a summer or winter squash depending on when you pick it. I have been making pickles with it, in fact hoping to make another batch today.

AHHHHH! Now the posts are making more sense. LOL!

Your pickles that you make with these.......are they sweet, sour or ?? What kind of seasonings do you put in them. My grandmothers both made watermelon rind pickles when I was a kid but I didn't really like them. Then someone brought some to a family reunion last summer and they were delicious. We don't eat a lot of pickles now that the kids are gone so I don't make any.

LOL! Smile They are zucchini bread'n'butter pickles, I am making them from the Blue Ball book. I haven't tasted them yet, they are still aging.

My mom made cucumber b'n'b pickles when I was little. I absolutely hated them until about the very last jar we ever had, at which point I finally realized I loved them (guess my sense of taste changed around then.) Mom's were quite sweet. The ones I made have turmeric in them, which mom's didn't have, and less sugar. Onions, peppers, mustard, celery seed, and pepper, alongside the vinegar/sugar/salt.
