Back in a former life when my grandfather had what was then called a Truck Farm, he would start new strawberry plants from the seeds on overripe strawberries that he would find in the field. But enough on a nostalgic trip of youth....

While at the grocery store  a clerk was removing spoiled fruit from the selves to freshen up the counters. I noticed a box of very ripe strawberries that were getting thrown out, and asked if I could have a couple of the berries to save the seeds.  He gave me a bag that he wrote "No Charge" on, and told me to take as many as I wanted. I put 4 of them in a bag and brought them home. I sliced off the skin with the seeds and am drying them so that I can separate the seeds for planting after I cold stratify them.  There will be several hundred seeds when they are dried, but many of them will not be mature enough to germinate.

Has anyone here tried growing strawberries this way?  Will they come back true to parent, or were the strawberries I'm taking seeds from hybrids that will revert to the parent?  Wondering if I'll get good edible strawberries, or I'll be wasting my time.

I just checked my 2 varieties, Albion and Quinault. Both are hybrids.

Are experiments ever a waste of time? Wink Especially when one is retired?
