Strawberries and Asparagus in the same bed?
Hello!
I moved last fall and I'm planning out 3 new raised beds, all 4'x8', 12" deep. I would like to do one with all my perennial veggies/fruits. I read an article recently about interplanting strawberries and asparagus, and was hoping someone here had tried it. Can anyone share tips? I was thinking of doing a 4'x4' section with alternating squares of 2-3 asparagus plants and 3-4 strawberry plants. Does that sound like it could work? I know I won't get much out of this bed for a couple of years, which is why I want to get it started this spring. I'm in Zone 6, with a sunny location for the beds. I plan to line the bottom of the boxes with cardboard or newspaper so that the roots can grow as deep as they want to go. Thanks in advance!

Re: Strawberries and Asparagus in the same bed?
I no longer grow strawberries, so haven't experimented with growing them together with the Asparagus. I don't have the Asparagus in a raised bed since it is a very long-term process once it is planted. The in-ground Asparagus bed is heavily mulched to both retain moisture and to control weeds, so I guess it would work to interplant Strawberries with them. Another site that I occasionally follow has a good article on interplanting strawberries and asparagus that you might find interesting:

Re: Strawberries and Asparagus in the same bed?
Welcome, Yardproblems. I have both but in separate beds. The only thing I am thinking about is the shade from the asparagus ferns on the strawberries. I think if I were to put them both in a bed, I would put the asparagus on the north end, and the strawberries on the south just to make up for the shading thing.

Ohiogardener, that's the exact article I read! I think it would work, I was just unsure about the spacing, since SFG allows us to put more into a small space than regular gardening.

Since Asparagus continues multiplying and spreading, they are more suited to a well-mulched in-ground garden. I have Asparagus plants that are over 40 years old, and still going strong - they were here before we moved here.

Re: Strawberries and Asparagus in the same bed?
Yarn, Welcome to the Forum from California. Asparagus can be planted 1 per square. Are you thinking of planting 4 strawberry plants in alternating squares? Or, one at the intersecting corners of the squares? You probably need to prevent the strawberry runners from taking root in the asparagus squares.
I've read on the Forum that you can have a dedicated 2' deep bed for asparagus, topping with compost as needed.

I'd also be concerned about the likelihood that asparagus spears would invade strawberry squares.
Mushrooms in hardwood chips with asparagus & strawberries.
I use 60 inch bed, with asparagus down the middle, with strawberries on both side.
Ruth Stout has a plan where one row of straw berries become three rows & the first row is removed every third year.
It is the old mother to daughter strawberry plan, removing plant by the third year, thins the patch & keep prime berry bearing plant in production.
I do not care for wood chips as mulch, unless I have wine cap mushrooms, you get an strong mycelium that will push out any other type of mycelium. You get mushrooms & compost all almost for free ($25-$50), for years to come.
You feed the mushrooms & the mushrooms feed your plants compost, in the south you can get two flush a season.
Youtube has tons of stuff on wine cap mushrooms & the three stages of harvest.
