strawberries - Spacing for potatoes and strawberries? Empty Spacing for potatoes and strawberries?

Post  donnainzone5 1/24/2017, 4:34 pm

I know, of course, that Mel said four per square foot.

However, my crops have been small to mediocre, so far.

Has anyone experimented with different numbers, such as one, two, or three per square foot?  If so, how were your results?

I space my potatoes 1 per square.  The potatoes are susceptible to many of the same diseases as tomatoes.  And we get all those diseases here.  So I space them far enough apart to try to keep the tops as dry as possible.  But I have not experimented with tighter spacing so I can't compare.  Last year, as I dug them up, I thought this was a waste of space.  So maybe this year I will try 2 per square and hope for few diseases.

I successfully grew smaller reds in a 5-gallon bucket at 4/bucket. I hope to repeat it this year. Very Happy

I've got everbearing strawberries planted at one per square. That was based on the recommended spacing on the package. Did not get much fruit the first year so I am hoping for a better crop this year. The plants have filled the squares nicely.

The directions on the strawberry plant were based on the assumption that you will let the strawberry plant develop new plants around it by way of the runners.  If so, you should thin them to 4 plants per square foot.
Another way is to plant the strawberries at 4 plants per square foot, but you have to trim all of the runners every year to avoid crowding.  That is what I do.

I did Yukon Gold at 1/square.  Had a great harvest 2 years ago, last year, succession planted them after sugar snaps, and they just did OK.
