ralitaco wrote:Looks very nice Raj. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I am concerned about your trellis. The plants can get very heavy when it is full and also when the plants cover the trellis their leaves may make it susceptible to the wind.
1. How is it secured to the box?
2. Do you have anything in place to keep it from falling over (either forwards onto the other plants or backwards onto the roof)?

good luck
Hi,

I am also not an expert yet Razz. I just buried both pole in the soil! Yes i need to figure out how to do it "Trial and Error" Smile If it some how bed i may put some support.....  i have to see how it moves forward with wind and plant weight !

Raj, I am so glad you checked back in with us here on the forum!  Looking good!  Tell us if you have actually eaten anything yet?  I can't wait to hear when you do...

SFG is a super cool way to grow food.  I really enjoy it, but also rely upon it.  cheers

Here's a picture that is in the ANSFG book:3 - Tryst with my first DIY SFG in India - Page 2 Roofto10
You would have to secure it with a cable going to the front AND to the back.

If you used something sturdier, like a 2x4 or a metal pipe, you could just go to the box.3 - Tryst with my first DIY SFG in India - Page 2 Secure10
(this obviously isn't a garden but it was the only picture I could find that had the wood running at the angle to secure the vertical to the horizontal)

of course you could build another trellis on the opposite side and connect the tops. You wouldn't have to put the string on it. 3 - Tryst with my first DIY SFG in India - Page 2 Big_bo10

Sanderson has attached what she calls "cup holders" in the corners. They are larger pieces of PVC that she slides her trellis' into.
Here is a link where she has posted photos:
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t19807p25-new-table-tops#253720

I know these are not the best pictures but I hope they make sense. I would hate to see the trellis fall over.

I used option #3 on 2 of my beds this year. The 3-way fittings have to be specially ordered. Tomorrow I will take a photo of using plumbers tape and screws to hold the poles to the outside of the box. To make it like option #3, 2 poles placed across the tops of 2 parallel trellises and strapped tightly would create a square or rectangle.

I hope i can still do using  elbow and T tube but still it little space consuming but still it will work. I like to but nylon thread in both side. Is it good to have on top also....  i know it hides plant from Sun!

Here are 2 ways I have attached trellises to the outside of the boxes. 2-wing electrical meal tubing fasteners: 3 - Tryst with my first DIY SFG in India - Page 2 Frames11
Fasteners made from plumber's tape. 3 - Tryst with my first DIY SFG in India - Page 2 Frames10

The 1" PVC tubes are the "cup holder", my current method of securing frames (PVC). I started off in 2013 using the EMT on the outside of the first boxes.

Raj, perhaps you can use the T connectors on the vertical posts and the elbow connectors to create a top cross.
Here is a very rough drawing:
3 - Tryst with my first DIY SFG in India - Page 2 Raj10
If you duplicate what you have and install it on the opposite side, you can use the T connector and run a pipe between the 2 sides.

I will caution you that several folks have had issues with the PVC not being strong enough to support the weight of the vegetables and most folks here use electrical conduit. Is the available where you are?

I wouldn't put nylon strong across the top for the purpose of your climbing plants growing across the top, as it would shade some of your lower plants.  Unless you plan on growing shade tolerant plants below it.  Some plants might actually benefit from the shade since I'm sure the sun gets pretty intense there.

One idea I had is if you put multiple T connectors to provide more stability, if you put one a little lower, you could put a netting of some kind across it in order to provide some support for tall plants like eggplant and peppers.

Before you know it you are going to have a sitting area there where you can relax and watch your garden grow as you cannot look out of a window as I can here on ground level.

It does not all have to be work you know. Very Happy
