Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
Thanks sanderson ... I owe this TT all to you! Now I'm beginning to think that Mrs TD and I could probably get by with just 2 or 3 of these TTs for most of what we need and convert the ground level SFGs into berry, garlic and asparagus farms. Probably will not happen but I like to dream.sanderson wrote:Wow

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
That cut up turnip looks delicious! I have never tried to grow them. Next year I am going to see if I can get some nice big turnips to come up in my garden. Maybe I will do better than I have with the beets this year.

Nice, TD! I love turnips, grew them this year as well. What do the daikon radish things taste like? What are they?

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
I grow daikon radishes as microgreens in the winter. I allowed the those in the garden to keep growing and flower. I find the pods to be slightly juicy with a mild radish taste.Scorpio Rising wrote:Nice, TD! I love turnips, grew them this year as well. What do the daikon radish things taste like? What are they?

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
An update following our 10 day vacation with nobody looking after the garden.
The plants in the TT are not looking well.
The 4x4 SFG boxes with the non SFG bed on the right.
In one of the 4x4 SFG beds we harvested a few strawberries from our first year everbearing plants.
The Calendula grew through the top of the chicken wire cage in this box.
Srawberries and Nasturtiums.
Sweet 100 Tomatoes (middle of photo) are beginning to turn red.
Lawns and SFG beds are overgrown.
This cucumber was perfect when I first saw it. One hour later it was half eaten by some creature.
Peas are still producing even though it has been very hot.
Banana Pepper in SFG box.
Only four of our Sunflowers (non SFG bed) have survived so far.
Tomatillo (non SFG bed) doing well.
Acorn Squash in non SFG bed.
Raspberries in non SFG bed.
Lobelia and Marigold in SFG box.
These cucumbers did not survive a critter attack.

Hey TD, welcome home. Your gardens fared OK for not having anybody water.
Do you have chickens? That cuc looks like the same damage my chickens do to squash and tomatoes. Tomorrow is a day that I will be making a barrier so they can't get them.

Looking good after 10 days. The TTs do dry out more than on-ground beds. No cool moist surface uderneath to help.

No chickens but hungry squirrels and rabbits.

Maybe next time I will ask a neighbour to water the TT if there is no rain.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
Maybe shade tunnel over the TT next time, with plastic bottles of water with pin holes here and there.
Everything looks fantastic, TD. I can't believe how far ahead of my garden yours is. You have cukes, peppers and squash! Apparently I need a 10 day vacation.

We have another trip coming up (but this time only to the Niagara and Toronto areas) so that may give me an opportunity to try your suggestions.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
BTW after the watering yesterday and the rain this morning, most of the plants in the TT have revived. The ones that are still looking bad are things like lettuce and salad leaves that were just about done before we went away anyway, so no real loss.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
Today's harvest etc.
Icicle radishes, swede turnip (very ugly), green onions, small turnips, daikon radish pods and peas.
I forgot to include these carrots in the above photo. A couple of them look like they came from an alien planet.
Some cut flowers (Calendula) from the SFG for Mrs TD.
A small eggplant.
The grass (and weeds) are so long I am going to have to cut it in more than one pass. The rain today has made it too wet to mow.
The grass in this area of the yard grew thick and long.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
I reckon you did well, TD. Thanks for the pics. You will have quite a bit of stuff for your compost heap.
I have never been away for ten days for quite some time; I am almost afraid to. Winter holidays for me.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
I had a nice surprise this afternoon in the SFG. Found a beet and two more eggplant. We will be eating the eggplants with dinner sauteed in butter.
I also cleaned up the TT. There is one square that needs replanting. The Oregano has gone to flower so I don't know if it is still good or not.

That's great TD. I can't say I like eggplant but they are my favorite looking vegetable, not sure why...

Nice, TD!!!
And, yes, I agree with Sanderson - GREEN grass - so lush, so pretty... mine's crunching when I walk on it...

Fantastic!
Yes! That oregano is still good. Don't pull it...it's a perennial. But try to keep it in it's square or it will spread all over.
TD!!!

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
After taking a few Kale and Swiss Chard leaves for a green smoothie this morning, I decided (rightly or wrongly) it was time to harvest my one and only broccoli.
And now it's time to give my new grass trimmer a whirl.

Exciting times, TD! Nice broc. Never got any florets bigger than a nickle on mine and they've bolted already. Guess I'll just grow them for the leaves from now on.
