SWEET STRAWBERRIES?????

In my area there used to be a strawberry farm that had the sweetest strawberries and they sold them by the roadway......now they are out of business due to a variety of problems......
I dont think they shipped well because of being so soft and sweet but it would be perfect for SFGing.....my strawberry variietys are sour...so I hope someone has had sweet ones and can share the secret.......

oh man...bummer they're out of business! there's a stand by our house that has world famous berries. People drive all over for them, but the don't sell the plants haha. Our berries are super duper sweet. We have all kinds of varieties, the only "secret" is the Back to Eden method we're using, which isn't a secret. What are you doing? maybe I can help if I know a little more? good to hear from you!!

I know my soil needs improvement,,.....I only have 8 plants in 2 squares.....4 each.....but I know in one of the seed catalogs it was mentioned how sweet this one kind was ....and I cant remember.....Back to Eden.....I watched a few shows but dont remember anything about strawberries.....
One of the reasons the strawberry fields closed down is because of so many homeless in that area.. stealing strawberries and dealing drugs is because someone murdered the night caretaker....grr grr So hope to find the variety someday......thx for any help.....

oh man....that sounds scary!! Sounds like your berries might just need a good old dose of good compost....food!!! It's been soooo hot too. Good luck!!

I found that if I pick any of my various varieties of strawberries before they completely ripen (which I tend to do because of critters taking bites out of them) they can be tart at that stage. So I put them in a pile under a turned over clear glass blow until they are completely ripe and then they are yummy.

Can't hurt to try.

I'm about to take my strawberries out since we get so few. I added some bone meal and they improved but not in quantity. I'll see what I can find on Back to Eden.

Rosina, you know that the mother plant will only produce for 2 or 3 of years, right?
The BTE method makes is really simple to make sure that only the strongest plants are the ones that grow thru the mulch in the spring. The older weaker ones will turn to compost under the mulch.

At least that's how it seems to be working in my garden. Every fall the bed gets covered by leaves, pine needles and seaweed. Every spring beautiful fresh green growth pops out. All it needs is tender loving neglect.

thanks everyone for your input...........I failed at doing them also in the strawberry jar pots.....I bet there are a lot of empty ones sitting around.....its so hard not to let them dry out......I think I will sit mine in a metal oil drip pan with water and let it absorb it.....I hope....worth a try......

they only live about 4 yrs......and theres everbearing, dominate etc.....so much to always....read they like pine needles aor a mulch.....

I have grown them....largely frustrating. I think if I were to do it again, I would put them in a tiered garden above ground, and grow the June-bearing varieties. Larger berries and a more concentrated harvest period. The everbearing ones I grew were just a berry here, a berry there, never enough to actually do anything with. And the bed got overtaken by the grass..... Mad

I gave up on my 4 x 8 strawberry bed 2 years ago. It was too close to the old oak tree and is invaded by roots. Also, for the two years I had the bed, some critter (I think a chipmunk that I saw skedaddling away) kept taking a bite out of every ripening strawberry. Also, a 4 foot wide bed was too hard to bend over and reach into the middle every day to try to find the ripening berries. So I am also considering raising a two foot wide bed, planting June Bearing variety, and using CC's suggestion of letting them finish ripening on the counter.
