Yep. I just looked at the excel on page one and saw your values.
Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
It's not working for me, either. I tried in three different browsers.

Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
Allyn, Try this one. Only enter the 3 numbers, and the other values will automatically change for your use.

Oh thank you! Silly me, I was trying to use the calculator link in the forum index. I had to try your link in a couple of browsers, but I did get it to work in Waterfox.

Oh dear Did the calculator move? When I tried this link (which worked last time I tried it), I get this message:
"Sorry, but only administrators can read topics in this forum."

The calculator has been inoperable for some time. The Admin may have removed it???
Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
Well, there ya go. It's been a while since I used it last. It was a crutch anyway. I calculated the cubic footage myself using good old-fashioned math. Mrs. Hood (my elementary school math teacher) would be so proud.

Need help with calculations
With the calculator not working can someone please help me figure out how much I need of each component? I have 2 x 4 garden boxes. Also how much compost do I add to my old boxes each year?
Thanks much!

Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
2' x 4' x 0.5' = 4 cubic feet (assuming 6 inch depth in 2'x4' box)
Each component = 4/3 = 1.33 cubic feet (approx 1.3 cu.ft. of vermiculite, 1.3 cu.ft. peat moss, and 1.3 cu.ft. of compost).
Keep in mind that peat moss is usually sold in compressed form. It needs to be fluffed up before measuring volume.

Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
Each year add enough new compost to bring to level back up to the original height.

Google is your friend. Here is an online calculator. Be sure to pick the correct option, such as US Quarts (Dry).lneal wrote:Ok I am an idiot I cannot find a way to convert quarts to cubic feet...anyone know how to do this?

What happens if you add too much/or not enough
of one part of the mix?

Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
My guess is that is not critical. In some locations they use only compost because the other ingredients are not available. Now if you only had vermiculite and/or peat moss and no compost, then that would not work.lneal wrote:What happens if you add too much/or not enough

Perhaps the more experienced SFGers will provide a better answer.

Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
Ineal, Never short the compost. Short the vermiculite, short the fluffed up peat moss, but never short the 1/3 quality compost. Do you think you opps? If so, tell us what happened and we will try to help you. I opps when I first made Mel's Mix and the folks here helped me correct the problem.

I agree..Compost in my opinion is the most important item in the square foot garden program...my thoughts are it should be emphasized much more than it is.

If you want to know how much cubic ft. you need take your bucket 1 gal., 5 gal. or whatever. the formula is gallons times 0.1337 equals cubic ft.

Re: MEL'S MIX CALCULATOR not working?
How do you upload an excel spread sheet?
I've been working on a "calculator" to do misc. calculations for me, kind of consolidating things into one "area".
Thought others may find it useful if I can figure out how to upload it.
