Baby Pak Choy density experiment

I just started a density test on some baby pak choy and figured I'd chronicle it here too since this site is definitely sees more traffic than my blog. My last harvest (4/sf) was just a couple days ago. They're smaller than they have been in cooler weather before bolting but I've got a good feeling I can make it work by upping the density to 9/sf. Of course it helps that I'm in coastal Southern California.

Here's the last harvest from a couple days ago before reseeding at the higher density. You can see the flowers forming, but unlike lettuces, they don't get bitter even when bolting. I'll be sure to post back my success or failure. For anyone interested they are Extra Dwarf Pak Choy from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and have become one of my new favorites.

I've been planting 5 baby bok choy per square. I have some now that look like yours, and I've been pinching off the flowers just to see what happens.

I always plant baby bok choi 9 per square foot. And even with some recent hot weather, they haven't yet begun to bolt.

Good to know. Do you know the source of your seeds? I don't have any experience with these during the heat of summer but I like them so much that if I can hit 12 month production I will.

I was doing 5/sq but they bolt practically just after popping up out of the ground. I'll try 9. Thanks for this.

The variety I planted this year is Ching-Chiang, from Territorial Seed Company. It's an early dwarf "bred to be tolerant to heat, rain, cold, and dampness."

I'm gearing up to make another stir-fry in a day or two and will let you know how this variety tastes.
