Just starting my first SFGs, 2 - 4x4 and will look around the site for info before asking too many newbie questions. I got the new book from the library and was looking here for info on determinate vs indeterminate tomato spacing. I would like to put more Roma's in with a few others varieties as well.

Okay off to go look for info!

Indeterminates can be trained up a trellis and, with good pruning, can be grown in 1 sq ft.

Determinates are bushier, not as gangly, so they sit and squat over several squares. Depending on the size of the variety, they take 4 sq ft (2x2) to 9 sq ft (3x3). I have only done very small determinate varieties and have managed to keep them in 4 sq ft quite nicely, but I am sure some could take the full 9 sq ft.

If you are not willing to use up the valuable sfg real estate, determinates can be grown in buckets of MM. The stem and roots only require the one pail, it is the bushiness flopping on the soil and shading other crops that makes them take up so many squares. Planted in buckets they are not shading anything else.
