Hello,

I am Tom Rake and am returning to the square foot gardening after a 25 year first try at square foot gardening. I first became discovered SFG from Mel's TV show, bought the books and began successful sprouting and planting and harvesting. I met my wife 20 years ago and she is a avid flower gardener and does not follow the SFG methods.

I wonder what the differences are in the new book. I know I modified the SFG methods for my own purposes to deal with a row gardening grandparent. A few year ago I found out that Mel was/is an engineer, being a computer engineer by degree I think that is why SFG makes so much sense to me, the method is organized around successful application of scientific principles and questions gardening dogma. And in the end it is really an optimized food growing process. And of course it is also fun.

That is what is on my mind as an introduction.

glad you\'re here to the forum! There are 10 new differences from the last book that make it even easier than before! Raised beds, no dirt. You really should get the book! I think even your wife will like it for flower beds too! I started last year and had amazing results after many failed attempts before when I just row gardened!

glad you\'re here To the forum Tom

I live in East Stroudsburg too, over by the Fernwood resort.
I'm on my second year with SFG and had an fairly good first year and looking forward to even better results this year. Maybe your wife will change her mind when she sees how much you get from a SFG box. I have read ANSFG first addition and hear that the second is loaded with a lot more info.

If you need any help finding supplies send me a PM and I can hook you up.

Good Luck With Your Garden

Welcome, Tom! Yes, definitely get the ANSFG book, even if you just check in out from the library at first. I started with the old book just last year before realizing there's a new book. Two of my 8 boxes have the old mix in them. Not sure how they will perform this year without fertilizer, but I added a ton of compost and have high hopes. So far so good, but I'm not that thrilled with the heaviness of the mix even though I also added lots of peat and vermiculite to it after reading the new book. When that day come that these 2 boxes need replacing I'll also replace the mix with the proper formula.

Start off with a fresh slate if you can, it's so much better!
