direct sow Broccoli and Cauliflower
Any one have any recommendations on direct sowing broccoli and cauliflower seeds? I have usually planted from seedlings but a) I didn't start them in time this year and b) can't seem to locate any locally. I do have some seeds - can I direct sow them in my prepared sfg?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: direct sow Broccoli and Cauliflower
The problem would be getting thru a hot summer without losing them. I don't think now is a good idea for starting seeds. The plants take so long to establish and you'll be into summer heat.
Try starting them for a fall crop instead. Makes better sense with bugs being less of a problem in fall so plants are hardier and harvest before freezes.
You can sow seeds in the garden in June (check your local extension agcy for the correct time) when they need the heat for germination and get a fall crop.

I agree with quiltbea... I'm also in zone 6 (6b I think), and I found plants at HD about 2 weeks ago. I transplanted, but I'm not even that confident that they will do well, even with a few weeks of a head start.
You could always try just to see what happens....worst case scenario you are just out a few seeds. If I was in your situation, I would wait a few months and prepare for a fall crop.
Best of luck - let us know what you decide to do!

TXX if you have the book by Mel ( details in my straplines ) he gives lists of germination times and cropping times from being sown . Check out what you want to grow and when you would like to harvest it and work back from that date using the info on Mels charts . It sounds much more difficult than it actually is.

Thanks Plantoid. I do have the book (my ultimate reference) but I was hoping to get some personal experience. I don't think I worded it very well. I am going to give it a go and I'll let you all know what happens.
Thanks.
Thanks.
