Garlic - has anyone grown from garlic bulbils? Empty has anyone grown from garlic bulbils?

Post  GWN 7/17/2012, 10:00 am

I have been reading about the garlic bulbils after a few of my scapes in my compost have continued on to ripening. They were the ones I missed Smile
Sounds as though growing from them is a very economical way of expanding your garlic number, it does take a few years, but sounds like it is a great way to get strong healthy garlic.

It is mentioned in a couple of my UK gardening books for sowing a few days after they are dried out into a light well drained soil with a bit of potash raked in but no fresh manure. .. not sure how it will work out in the freezer where you live for six months of the year .Temp best 0-10 oC/32-50 oF.

This last year I tried to store some in the nkitchen to overwinter but they were too far dehydrated , come mid Feb out of around 50 odd only one germinateds and grew ..it is now just four inches tall and still in a pot .

Well the article I included was from what appears to be a huge garlic farm a few hundred KM from here.
Same climate.

Now we do almost all our bulbil planting in the fall. The advantage of fall planting is that you don’t have to be concerned about the bulbils drying out or getting moldy over winter if you do not have ideal storage conditions. On the other hand, we have lost a few to rodents.

We mulch our fall planted bulbils once the ground is hard and the rodents have made their nests elsewhere. In the spring we pull back the mulch.
Sounds like they plant them in the fall.

I have.... but not in a very systematic way. I usually have a dense row sorta near an edge of bulbils and too small cloves. I use them in the spring like green onions, except these are garlic. I have never bothered to grow them up bigger though.

Interesting
I can eat garlic and cannot eat onions OR green onions
Perhaps an alternative

We will see what happens. I found some when I was cleaning my garlic and stuck them into an empty square. Also the root bulblets on the elephant garlic.
