Plastic fencing to protect strawberries?
My attempt to build a strawberry tower resulted in a 4x4 box with a 3x3 box on top. (My 2x2 box would not safely stay on top of the 3x3 so now I have a dedicated asparagus box.) All of the boxes are surrounded by 4' high, 1" grid plastic fencing around it to keep out the deer.
I could completely see myself or the kids getting tangled up in the
nylon bird netting, since we'd have to remove it in order to open the
plastic fencing that is wrapped around the box to harvest or tend to
plants.
If I could attach 1" plastic fencing to the top of the deer fence, would that protect strawberries from the birds?

Re: Plastic fencing to protect strawberries?
Hi! I just used that green plastic type of fence (not sure of the opening size...but it's probably around 1") and yes, I ran mine around the strawberries and then attached a piece to the top. I say "me" but uhh....well it was really my better half. I think he used cable ties to attach the top to three sides of the fence and then left me one side I could open (sort of like a door or gate). My table is probably about 2x3.
It's not terribly pretty, but it does work and I find you only really need it when the berries are ripening...funny how those birds will wait for the perfect ripeness (the day you go out to pick it) and STRIKE....
Ok I'm very embarrassed to post this because it shows my husband's dumping area of the yard, the neighbor's falling down garage wall and canvas and various other junk....but the strawberries in MM in the repurposed kid's pool table don't seem to mind. I'm sure you could do a less haphazard job of putting the plastic netting on, but this should give you the general idea... It keeps the birds out of mine.
PS - I know strawberries won't ever get that tall - the t-posts (or u-posts as some call them) we already had....so my husband just used them in the legs of the table... Good thing I tell my husband I like rustic....

Re: Plastic fencing to protect strawberries?
Have a look at this thread for more ideas re strawberry beds. Josh's is particularly fantastic. He uses two PVC pips fitted kitty-corner in his box with netting over to protect his strawberry planter...

Re: Plastic fencing to protect strawberries?
UnderTheBlackWalnut - I have that same fencing set-up. I thought I would have leftover plastic fencing, but I used it all up today setting up protection for another box I built. Love the repurposed table.
I'll have to look at the garden shops to see what kind of fabrics/netting they sell. I have a while to worry about this, but want to be prepared to protect the fruit with all the hard work I've put into this new box.
