Post  Too Tall Tomatoes 11/30/2011, 9:24 pm

Well I just ordered my tomato seeds for next year. I'm not growing the seeds myself but I found a woman who runs a greenhouse who's more than willing to grow the seeds I give her.
Anyway, my list is:

1) Mortgage Lifter - Radiator Charlie's
2) Wapsipinicon Peach
3) Boxcar Willie
4) Brandywine Red - Landis Valley
5) Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red
6) Purple Calabash
7) Omar's Lebanese
8 ) Bloody Butcher
9) Black Early
10) Black Cherry
11) Cherokee Green
12) Eva Purple Ball
13) Costoluto Genovese

I'm also ordering:

1) Big Zac
2) Sungold
3) Sweet Million

Nutz? What a funny thing to say when you post in the peanut jar.

I am over the top thankful that TSC will send plants for each of their tomato seeds if I ask (and pay). It helps keep my supply of envelopes of "didn't work out so well" as small as possible. Can I ask, will all of these go into SFG's or do you have a dirt garden too?

I am also getting the itch. This year I am going to trial as many giant plum types as I can and maybe a couple of large full season tomatoes (that will never come ripe in the PNW....but I have a plan).

I will be anxious to hear about mortgage lifter and clint (what a kewl name) as well as how your summer is.

+1 I think your list is impressive TTT. I really look forward to seeing your "tomato" garden in the coming year. Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what you want to do and that is great. I wish I was more plan orientated like that lol. I am a last second planner👅 .

I will say, I have done pretty good tho so far on getting my beds and compost ready for next year. I have to if I want any kind of success tho. Spring and summer are just incredibly busy for me, and I am determined to have the best garden I have ever had, coming up. So I so your planning is a wee bit of an inspiration for people like me. A little kick in the seat if ya know what I mean.Very Happy

Also, how could ya go wrong with a tomato named after Clint Eastwood! BOOOYAAAH!!My 2012 Tomato Grow List 53366

I had 20 different kinds last year. We narrowed down to 5 for the fall and will more than likely plant about 10 different ones this summer. There are just to many to choose from! Looking at your list makes me realize how many types there are! I've only tried 3 of those!!! We love the mortgage lifter. That one was a keeper for us. My aunt did the black cherry and loved it.

Post  Too Tall Tomatoes 12/1/2011, 11:09 pm

Before I joined here, I thought there might be about 2 or 3 dozen varieties of tomatoes to pick from. I don't remember who it was on here, but someone posted a link to tomatofest.com and the tomato selection there shocked the heck out of me.....something like 600 varieties.

I remember going through every single tomato description on that web site and I would pick out some neat sounding names and I would study up on them. That's pretty much how I came up with the list I have.

My vote for the coolest name is the Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red.

The real funny thing is that I'm not done. I can see myself picking up a few more varieties. Big Zac, and Sungold are two that I know I'm getting.

My biggest problem is figuring out the logistics of it all. My 2012 Tomato Grow List 43549

Well I got my tomato seeds today from Tomatofest and Tatiana's. Tomatofest sent me St. Ivy seeds for free and Tatiana's sent me Tomatiti de Jalapa, and Lescana.

So, with these three freebies, I'm going to skip Big Zac, Sungold F1, and a red cherry.

15 varieties.....my 2012 grow list is complete! cheers

I'll probably just plant most of the same varieties I bought seeds for last year...and hope for a cooler spring so that I can actually enjoy more than a few off each plant this this year. (Last year we got up to 97 just three weeks after a killing freeze of 28).

Really looking forward to several that I found delicious last year:

Orange-fleshed purple smudge

Green Zebra

Grubb's Mystery Green

Elliephant, I'm really glad to hear that you found the orange fleshed purple smudge delicious. They are so beautiful! I grow tomatoes for our restaurant, so I grow varieties that are not mainstream. Beautiful ones are a definite plus!

I've seen that purple smudge tomato(forget where though) and I thought it looked awesome. I read a few reviews on it and a few of them weren't too favorable. One of the things they said was that the purple "smudge" on top isn't actually common.

With all of the tomato varieties I have, I am really nuts if I try to get another one.

I only got about 5-6 tomatoes from my one OFPS plant (heat shut down production) but all of them had the purple smudge, even though it's supposed to show up better under cooler conditions. I found it to be a very creamy tasting tomato that was wonderful on sandwiches with mayo.

Yes Martha....I AM nuts! I found a hot deal on some Purple Smudge tomato seeds. localharvest.com has them 25 seeds in a pack for 1.00 per pack and FREE shipping with a minimum order of $2.65 on those seeds. So.....I ordered 3 packs! LOL

I'll figure out how I'm going to fit 16 varieties of tomatoes in my garden. Good thing I have until May to do that. LOL

1) Mortgage Lifter - Radiator Charlie's
2) Wapsipinicon Peach
3) Boxcar Willie
4) Brandywine Red - Landis Valley
5) Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red
6) Purple Calabash

11) Orange Flesh Purple Smudge
12) Eva Purple Ball
13) Costoluto Genovese
14) Lescana
15) St. Ivy
16) Sungold F1
17) Fireball

I was all set with this list. I even gave the seeds to the woman who's going to grow them for me and I thought, "Ok. This is it". Well then I came across another variety that interested me. It's called Fireball. When I saw that name I just had to buy it. It's the name of one of my favorite Deep Purple albums.

17 tomato varieties? Wow...that's crazy.

My 2012 Tomato Grow List March_14

Who but gardeners put up pic's of boxes of dirt and are proud of doing so?

It was beautiful today so I eased into the new season making and filling soil blocks and filling them with seed. This is just the tray of tomatoes. (there is also a tray of onions-leeks, peas, greens, and brassicas)

Here is the part that is nutz in my postage stamp world. I already know that I will be getting about 6 plants from TSC later in spring AND I am looking for a sweet 100 or sweet million to go with my gold nugget.

Very proud of you TTT

My 2012 Tomato Grow List Empty Tomato list

Post  curio 3/8/2012, 8:09 am

Our tomato list for this year is fairly small, compared to those. We are growing five varieties. Four are ultra-early or extra-early (short season) varieties, and one is a shorter mid-season.

Ultra-early:
Sub-Arctic Plenty--50 days
Siberia--48 days
Extra-early:
Legend -- 65 days
Early-Mid Season:
Black Krim--70-75 days
Cherry:
Gold Nugget--60 days

All but Black Krim are determinate. I wanted to try a couple of these to see if we can't get a good crop early on in the year. The last two summers have been nearly non-existent, making it difficult to get nice fruit on anything needing over 75 days or so.

I just hope once I start my tomato project I'll stick with it. LOL

I want to grow that many tomatoes because I want to experiment with different varieties....find out what they look and taste like. Also, I am REALLY hoping that I don't screw up while trying to prune each plant to a single stem. If I do screw up and production suffers, I'll still have alot of tomatoes based on the number of plants.

I really want to keep track of everything I do this year. I'm even thinking of having my own website and documenting everything I do from the cooking of the compost pile up until the end of harvest.

I have soil blocks of Legend and Gold Nugget.

Everyone gets all happy about Sungold and I thought that I ordered one last year, but I got a gold nugget instead. YUM She was my first tomato and she kept us in sweet snacks all summer (that is something in the PNW.... last year was our 2nd lousy tomato summer in a row).

Legend did not do as well for me but I discovered that I had her buckets standing in water. Because I was seduced into buying seed instead of a plant in 2011, I'm trying her again this year. Hope she does better.

Besides the mega Roma's that are coming from TSC the new for me this year Tomato is Chianti Rose.

Debs ....went a little crazy with the new soil blockers yesterday (4 flats made and planted, one of those was tomatoes.)

My list:

Reisentraub

Next year I'll ditch the reisentraub in favor/flavor of something new. Mortgage lifter sounds interesting. Also would like to try some white tomatoes.

I'm planning on ordering a few heirloom tomato transplants from seed saver exchange. Gonna try: Gold Medal, Brandywine, German Pink, and Italian Herloom.

Ive searched and I find somewhat conflicting information regarding cross pollination with tomatos. With everyone growing different varieties, are there spacing requirements and other precautions to take or is it something I just dont need to worry about?
