From what I understand, let's say you have a Brandywine tomato growing right next to a Gold Medal tomato. Some cross pollination will occur but the Brandywine will produce Brandywine tomatoes and the Gold Medal will produce Gold Medal tomatoes. If you were to save seeds from each of those plants and you tried growing them the following year, that's when the tomatoes will show characteristics of the other plants.

I wouldn't worry about cross pollination unless you want to save seeds.

I actually do plan to try and save seed from the heirlooms. Next year I hope to be growing everything from seed instead of having to buy transplants.

Think they would be relatively safe if there are at least two squares between each tomato plant?

They would be even safer if you could have around 1/4 mile between each plant. My 2012 Tomato Grow List - Page 2 889526

Seriously though, I am no expert at all. I do know some about tomato plants but I don't know enough to be able to effectively teach someone. Most of my knowledge comes from reading articles I found on the internet.

In a square foot garden, you could try bagging the groups of blossoms with nylon netting, or maybe fabric used to make bridal veils. Even that's not a 100% guarantee that you will avoid cross-pollination.

Here's an article I dug up. It has more answers for you.....

My driveway is about .8miles... My 2012 Tomato Grow List - Page 2 27650 ... nah lol.

I may try the bagging technique for a few blossoms on each plant. Thanks for the info and the link.

I am growing brandywine and another non heirloom called NARM.
It is a plum tomato that is especially suited for the non heated greenhouse...... (hoop house )(the way I see it anyways)
It apparently is known for early growth. I guess I am hoping to plant these ones in the hoop house earlier than the others might like it.
(I guess for us northern gardeners) These I got at West Coast Seeds.

As far as saving seeds etc, I have always found that by composting the remains from the strainer when I made tomato sauce, there are TONS of seeds.
The depressing thing I have always found is though I start seeds early inside, baby them along, the "volunteers" from the compost always catch up to my other plants and sometimes exceed them.

I love the seed catalogs and fantasize about all the tomatoes I am going to grow, then get real and just put in Brandywines and Opalkas in the garden.

I also do a couple containers with Matt's Wild Cherry and Yellow Pear, as the only small tomatoes I've ever liked.

When I win the lottery, I will hire a team of gardeners and grow all the rest to try. Wink
