growing rice?

According to the SFG book, square foot gardening has been converted to square foot meters and has been incorporated around the world; it's been taught to people to who live in remote and rural areas to grow their own food, and provide for their villages, families, etc.

This includes growing rice in a large enough quantity that's it's sufficient for their family and villages.

Since they can do it on such a large scale, I'm wondering if it's possible to grow enough rice for myself, or if it's just not practical. I'm not really sure how much rice I'd like to grow; enough for an extended period of time; 3 months or 6 months, I'm not sure.

I don't even know if I'll do this.

I know that rice is a 'bog vegetable' that to my knowledge grows best being waterlogged. I know Mel's mix wouldn't be suitable, because according to the book 'it's impossible to overwater a squarefoot garden'.

This is great for veggies, but the kiss of death for rice.

I'm also wondering if people know where I can find a vendor that provides a variety of rice seeds. The main varieties I'm looking at are.....

Jasmine
Basmati
Long grain white
wild rice (yes I know it's technically not rice)
Japanese short grain

Many moons ago when I was in high school I had a friend who's parents grew rice in their basement. Being in high school I could have cared less about such matters so really all I recall is rows of 5 gallon buckets and lights hanging over them.

I don't really know anything about rice other than needing lots of moisture so Mel's Mix might actually be to your benefit by retaining moisture.
