Sugar Cane

Has anyone tried sugar cane in the SQFT box?

Where do you buy quality setts? What varieties are best?

Oh! Sugar cane! I haven't thought about that in years! And it never even occurred to me to try it in the square foot garden. My younger sister used to love to chew that sugar cane to get all of the sweet juices out of it when she was a child!

I know sugar cane can be used to make sugar,but am unsure whether your average person could do that. What would the average home gardener use it for, except to please children who, like my sister when she was young, love to chew the canes?

I'm sure there will be others who'll know more about growing it in a sfg than do I and will answer your question, but thanks for bringing back some sweet memories!

I know nothing about sugar cane but was also interested. It does not look like a good fit for a SFG bed but here is some info:

I grow stevia. I haven't had any problems with it at all. During the growing season, I pick one leaf to bruise and put in with my tea as it steeps. After first frost (frost sweetens it) I harvest it all and hang it to dry like any herb. I keep the crushed leaves in a spice shaker and use it to sweeten canned tomato products through the winter.

Mamachibi---great info about the Stevia. I have a huge plant growing and was wondering how I should harvest it. Thank you!

If looking for sweet there is also Sorghum. I have a few going this year. We'll see how it tastes. It is drought tolerant so this year has been just fine for it.
