Three ears of corn..

.. ready in the tiny little garden, and supper tonight. So far, this season, I have produced 4 beautiful ears of corn and it is 4 more than I have ever managed to get before! LOL.

Only problem with the little ...?? earwigs ??? ( brown slinky bugs with pinchers on their butt) which I truely hate. I hate earwigs and thousand leggers.. I'd rather have 20 giant spiders crawling on me than one each of those other critters in the same room with me.

Caused a great deal of screaming and squealing.. finally doused all three ears in a bucket of water to drown them, then proceded to shuck the corn in my gardening gloves, ......while screaching everytime one of those nasty buggers ran out between the husks. I am pretty sure I could possibly die of fright if one touched my skin. LOL.

Now, I have been known to gather spiders up and gently put them outside when found in my house, but these things I smashed with a fly swatter with a great deal of glea, and washed the ones I could down the drain.

Glad to know I am not the only one who feels that way. There is something about those things that I just can't stand. They make my skin crawl.

I am the same way with crickets. I HATE CRICKETS!!! Hubby hates spiders but doesn't mind crickets, I hate crickets but don't mind spiders. We have an arrangement...........

Good arrangement... I'd say I'd try to work out one with my cat, but the last thing she caught was a mouse.. and while I was sleeping on my back with my mouth gapping open, she dropped it.. very much alive.. into my open mouth.

Needless to say, neither I or the mouse were very happy with that arrangement.

If she does it with an earwig, she will have to find a new home.

I can't breathe! I'm picturing it! Good thing my wine glass is empty - I would hate to waste good wine spitting it on my keyboard!

Looking back on it, I can say with absolute assurity, that no matter how loudly I scream, I am quite sure I can never depend on my neighbors to come check on me or call the police to make sure things are ok.

I will say, I get a good laugh out of it now... at the time, not so funny. Took me months to be able to sleep the night through... or sleep soundly. Everytime I heard the patter of little paws, I'd sit straight up and scream "Molly, you'd better not be bringing another mouse to the bed"

I still remember a time in college (back in the dark ages) when I was sleeping on my back, on my bed, when a cricket landed on the front of my throat. It became a jet-propelled cricket when I flung it across the room and it smacked against the far wall. (that was not the beginning of my hatred of crickets, just a confirmation of it!)

You do realize your cat really, really loves you? She was offering you the very freshest meat she could get...

Oh, yes. I do. However, by the 3rd time she got around to bringing a mouse to the bed (only the first time in the mouth) I tried giving her mouse killing lessons (which is an entire story on its own)..thinking maybe it was something her "real" momma didn't get a chance to do. At some level, between that, and my freaking out everytime one got presented to me alive, it must have sunk in, because no more mice in the bed, and she had led me to some dead ones.. which she got an enormous amount of praise for. (old house, no way to keep them out)

The first cat I ever had used to bring me still-wiggling lizard tails, live mice, and small live snakes. She was originally a city stray who used to survive by begging from apartment to apartment (she was an ADORABLE tuxedo) so I don't think she ever learned how to hunt and kill anything! When she couldn't find something wiggling to bring to me, she would show up with a mouthful of insulation batting that she had wrestled out from under the house and sit in her spot in the middle of the living room floor with it until I gave her the 'Good Kitty' and her head rub. Her one and only 'kill' was a neighbor's cockatiel that had escaped during cage-cleaning. Its wings were clipped and it could not fly and it had hopped into my yard. I got it away from the cat almost immediately and made it a perch out of a huge knitting needle stuck through a box, but I think it died from heart failure during the night!

PS - On a gardening note, she used to curl up and nest in my garden plants! I think she liked the cool shade at the base of the plants!

Goosegirl, I vaguely recall reading something about cat spit being toxic to birds, but that may have been an urban myth. It's possible the cockatiel suffered some internal injuries that eventually killed it.

I remember one cat that proudly showed off the mouse she had 'caught', with the snaptrap still attached

I've never heard the cat spit thing, but I love the snaptrap story!
