picklebush cucumber
I just got the idea to plant cucumbers to make pickles. I saw, and bought, a packet of picklebush cucumbers. I wonder if anyone has ever done these or similar. The packet describes planting 3" apart in a hill and thinning to 2 - 3 per hill when 3 " high. The hills are to be 36" apart.
Do you think I can translate this into 1 bush per square in my sfg? Or can they be even closer?
I also wonder how many to plant to obtain a significant yield to have enough to can in a batch.

I just followed the SFG book and planted 2x per square with a trellis. Most of the planting instruction do not contemplate vertical growth for plants.

Is this really a bush cucumber? Mel's instructions for cucmbers two per square is assuming a vining variety> He gives no recommendation for a bush cucmber.
Since my cucumber putzed on me last year, I don't have any idea how many plants would be required to harvest enough for a batch at one time. Sorry!

Re: picklebush cucumber
Yes, a bush variety is what I'm looking at. Nope, there's no advice in the book about bush cukes. I'm now considering using buckets in place of the "hills" recommended on the package and several places I've looked online talk about bush cukes being good for containers. I still can't find any suggestions about how many cukes to expect at once for a batch of pickles. Probably because there are so many variables in soil.
My cucumbers failed (aka. died) last year too... hoping to do better this year.
