Need advice on caging plants in 5 gallon buckets and keeping critters out of them.
I knew I'd need to do some sort of cage for my toms in buckets but didn't put much thought into how to protect them from being attacked like they were yesterday. Would putting weed cloth over the top of the soil help? In the past I've purchased dog runs that have 8 panels, each being 2 feet wide. These fences work well, and have a gate for easy access, but cost $80 plus shipping. How high of a fence do I really need to keep squirrels and rabbits out? I could just do chicken wire, but trying to harvest through 48" high chicken wire could be a pain. Has anyone found any sprays that work really well, or granules? I'm using Repels All but had not used it on that new plant. I also thought of just putting a tom cage in the bucket but that won't keep critters out. Any help is appreciated!

I always do my tomatoes in a bucket. I use a section of cattle panel (6 in squares) and make a round cage to go around them. Keeps all critters out so far BUT I also have cats outside. I do know that rabbits would not get into it.
