Is chcken manure okay to use in Mel's Mix?

Hi!

I'm new to the forum but have been using Mel's wonderful Square Foot Gardening method for a number of years. We were able to secure five kinds of compost -- until last year. One of our sources disappeared. We still have access to: composted cow manure, mushroom compost, worm castings (we just use this when we plant because it's more expensive) and wood compost. I saw in Mel's book that he has a photo of a bag of chicken manure -- but I just wanted to check to make sure this is a good choice. I read that chicken manure is "stronger" and I want to be sure we're okay using it. I know it would be just one part of a larger whole -- but does anyone else use composted chicken manure? Thanks for any response you can offer!

To the SFG Forum!!! the chicken manure/litter is fabulous, but it needs to be completely composted. If you are buying it in a bag, it is most likely composted (should say on the bag) and great to add to the Mel's mix or to the garden.

Thank you very much! I thought it probably was...but we're building 18 boxes at a church this Saturday and I didn't want to doom the project from the start! I'll be sure the bag says "composted"! Thanks, again!

Good question! I'm part of a ministry called Grace Seeds and one of our projects is called Share the Harvest. Share the Harvest helps partners (faith communities and secular groups) learn to grow food in a way that models sustainability for the earth and provides our partners with opportunities to learn about hunger and poverty...and grow vegetables and fruits that we give to local food pantries. This Saturday's project is at one of our partner sites. They've had a small garden for a couple of years -- but are working to create a community garden. The 18 boxes are the first step! They have a ton of green space so there's lots of room to expand if there's interest. The forecast is for rain...but we'll get it done! Thanks for asking!

Very glad you joined us. Share the Harvest program sounds like a wonderful effort to help those in need. There are several members of this forum that grow specific beds just to share with their local food pantries, and others who contribute their excess produce as well.

What a great program you are involved in. Gardeners of the world unite. I used black hen in my mix and although it was stronge smelling at first it semed to work just fine.

I used Black Hen in my second mix and it is definately out performing my first mix. First mix only had 4 composts, but one was Black Kow which I have used for a few years and know is good stuff. I still have some leftover 1st mix and I bought a bag of Black Hen to add to it.
