Re: why Mels mix
Mel's Mix is the heart and soul of Square Foot Gardening. The mix you mention has dirt in it, MM doesn't. It's all about the compost really... read on for a clear explanation...How Strong is Your Backbone

Re: why Mels mix
I fully understand the need for compost,I use worm casting for the most part,I feed worms with rabbit dropping soo the casting is almost rabbit droppings anyways.

Re: why Mels mix
For example Miracle gro doesn't have the compost component you want if you want Mel's Mix. The miracle grow mix has more than 50% sphagnum, which is not ideal as it is really a soil conditioner, a vehicle for the chemically derived nutrients to get to the plants. I think a lot of the answers to the many questions you may have can be found within the All New Square Foot Gardening book. Your local library may have it.
Re: why Mels mix
I've already ordered the new book
