Hello everyone. I am trying to find a good heat resistant lettuce for Kansas City.

I already have romain, riley, mesclun mixture, and swiss chard. This is my first garden and all of the lettuce is growing great and we have had several salads. I am wondering if I need to get to starting the next crop of something else now to avoid a large gap if all of this stuff gives in to the heat. Thanks for any advice.

Simpson's Elite! You can find packets of seeds at most big box stores. I feel it performs a little better than Black-seeded Simpon. Get a little shade on it and it might not bolt at all if you keep harvesting it regularly.

Funny you should ask, because I just picked up a couple packets of seeds today that say they are more heat tolerant than most lettuces. Both are from Ferry Morse: Parris Island Cos and Salad Bowl. I haven't grown either before so I can't speak from personal experience, but if the seed packet is right these might be good options for you.

Now if it would only stop raining so I could do less shopping and more gardening! Very Happy

I have Parris Island Cos in my garden...it is still growing great! We have had highs in the 80-83 range for the last week, at least. I was sure I would lose it but it looks really good. It's not huge, but I took a gamble and planted it late for our area (Mar 12). Good luck!

Salad Bowl did well for me over the winter with consistant 80 degrees days (often high 80s, it was a warm winter)

My Washington State summer probably does NOT count as a good test for heat tolerant. But the best August salad from my garden came from the pretty Speckled Trout’s Back, a cos type of lettuce that was nutty in spring, and only slightly bitter-sweet (easily overcome with dressing for those who do not like that taste) in summer. STB was slow to bolt. The first square was planted in February, clipped back to nubs all year long and kept coming back every couple to three weeks.
