Flowers for Kids

My Daisy Girl Scouts are putting together their mini-flower gardens next meeting. I need seed suggestions for fast growing flowers that will actually flower this summer and maybe grow low in their little mini garden bucket.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

I bought a pack of mimosa pudica for a few bucks and it is definitely my sons favorite. He even built a tiny trellis for it out of craft sticks(it does not need a trellis!)

You may have heard it called "the sensitive plant". The first seed ears are just boring leaves but the every set of leaves after that are "tickle" leaves. When you touch them, they "shiver", then close up, very cool. Not a flower, but fun for kids, even when tiny.

Marigolds are my favorite kid flower. The seeds are pretty big for little fingers and they are brightly colored. Last year in kindergarten they sent home a cup with zinnias. An other thought might be an herb. They smell nice and are pretty tough. Good luck.

My kid's Daisy Troop planted daisies. They are in a plastic cup and need to be replanted already- hopefully this weekend. She also loves marigolds, but her favorite are snapdragons. If you can find seed packs of dwarf zinnias and cosmos, both of those should grow quickly for you and will put out great color.

I should have said....I can't plant sunflowers (or anything not frost tolerant) till June 1 here. We will do that as soon as we can. Smile

These will be in a little container. The reason I didn't do Daisies is because I was told they don't bloom year 1?? Is this not true?

If you are going to wait until June to plant seed outside, be prepared for bloom in mid August. If you started the seeds in cups now, then transplant you would get bloom earlier. I think if you just threw some sunflower seed outdoors now they would probably be fine, just my $0.02. Wink

OH.....well, maybe I will do that then. I was just kinda listening to the packets. I love sunflowers and have about 10 packs I am planting all of! I guess I just didn't think of transplanting a sunflower. Embarassed

I'm trying nasturtiums, too. Violas and pansies are happy flowers, too, although I have no idea about starting those from seeds.

middlemamma - last Saturday at art class, my kid planted marigold seeds as part of an Earth Day project. By Wednesday night, we had one seedling and by last night there were a dozen. I don't know how many she planted, but the germination rate is through the roof and they came up SO quickly.

And the daisies she planted two weeks ago are getting their second sets of leaves now. Both plants will need to be transplanted this weekend. I haven't heard that daisies don't bloom their first year, so I don't know what to say about that. I hope it is wrong.

And I have had great success transplanting sunflowers. I am unwilling to direct-plant because the squirrels just sit and laugh at me.

Let us know what you decide. I love the idea of planting something with the Daisies!

Well I had a $5 off coupon and a $5.00 giftcard for Ace Hardware...so I just went down and picked up some actual Daisy seeds among other stuff. Apparently there are different KINDS of daisy's like everything else. LOL Some are annual....Duh. The perennial ones don't bloom the first year I guess?

For this project I don't want to be transplanting. This little mini garden will stay in the bucket they each have to plant in.

Come end of may they are getting an actual SFG to plant in as well. At least that is the plan.
