I need a visual guys....I have 5 pallets (FREE GWYNN! I have the pallets...now what? 432789 )

I am going to start another compost pile. Right now I have some compost working in a tumbler...but want to start another pile. Have never seen or done the pallet method and I need to SEE IT.

Anyone have pictures they can share to help me out?

Check out the last entries. I was bored one day. Yesterday I went out and added a 2nd set of pallets to one side and made a double bin. I'm construction challenged, so everything was done with stakes and twine.

I also put in a single stake on each front side and set a pallet over the single stake, tied it up on top to the side pallet to make a "hinge" for a front "door". No pics yet on that.

I used steel fence posts to hold up the pallets. The vertical pallet in the middle is removable to ease the turning process. There are other pallets to put in front to close the compost pile from view and limit access to critters.

Do any of you think Zip ties would work?

I didn't think about a bottom I have the pallets...now what? 601593 Just thought it would go on the ground. Hmmm...wont stuff fall through the slats if I put a pallet as the bottom?

That's a great site (you never disappoint) Camprn! Is that how you do your compost?

Gwynn? W\here are you pics? I have the pallets...now what? 950477 Just kidding! Love ya!

I have the pallets...now what? Empty Compost

Post  Gail Celeste 4/9/2011, 5:23 am

Wow, hillgardens.com is a pretty cool site. Hope to try his composting methods.
Guess that I have been doing it all wrong. I just have piles all over of leaves and dump my lawnmower bag out on them, and kitchen scraps and coffee grounds., Well, too much green, and surprised that Mel said you have to dry clippings first. I am spreading them out to dry now. Also I thought the key was frequent turning (which I don't get done), but seems there is not total agreement on that either.

MM I do not have a pallet floor in my compost bin as it interferes with my scooping the compost when I turn the pile. But if you want to do the no turn method with the fenestrated tubes for ventilation, using a pallet on the bottom is what you would want. I think I would not want to use zip ties as sometimes I want to move the pallets around. Baling twine or light clothesline would work pretty well to keep them hanging together! What a Face

They mention on the tutorial for the composter box shown to put lumber peices between the original slats. Not totally tight but to fill in most of the gap but still allow airflow
