Peanuts

We want to grow some peanuts this year. My question is how many per square? I have 9 squares available and want to get the most we can out of them.

Any help/tips on growing, watering or planting would be very appreciated.

I grew peanuts in Mel's Mix, in big tubs on my deck. I planted six plants between the two tubs and we got loads of peanuts! I'm sorry to say I don't know about spacing for SFG, since I didn't grow them in the beds themselves. I know they need consistent watering. If I was late, the leaves definitely showed it, so they make it easy to figure out how much water they need.

We grew peanuts in a row garden when I was a kid. Peanuts are usually planted about 6 or 7 inches apart. If I were planting them in my SFG, I'd plant them in my deep box, and probably plant five in the first square, like the dots on the number five on a pair of dice. In the second square I'd plant four, at the points of a cross - middle top, middle bottom, and middle sides. Then five in the next square, four in the next, and so forth. That would make the plants spaced equally across several squares.

Peanuts have a long growing season, about 130 days, and do better if they get plenty of water.

Hmm, maybe I'll follow my lettuce with a few squares of peanuts. Thanks for the idea.

Can I sneak in with an extra question? I was just struggling to shell some peanuts to put in a bird-feeder. Is there an eay way to do this, or is it best just to settle down and listen to the radio?

Icemaiden, I have not heard of any easy way to shell peanuts, so sorry.

Does anyone else have suggestions?

Sorry, no suggestions. But it begs the question: what are you feeding?

We buy peanuts by the 50 pound sack to feed the squirrels, stellar jays, and whoever else wants them. I can't imagine shelling them first.

OK, the normal birds in my garden consist of red-wing thrushes and starlings (and crows sometimes on the house roof). But this winter there have been a bunch of red polls hanging around. I've been hanging out fat balls with seeds in, which all the birds like and I realised that the red polls can actually hang upside down and stuff, so I got a wooden bird feeder, bought on holiday once and then stored since the birds showed it no interest, and put in some peanuts and sunflower seeds.

It is so much fun seeing these pretty little birds pecking away it it. I don't think unshelled nuts would work.

Aside from that, my daughter was making a veggie curry which called for a lot of peanuts and we thought it rather boring shelling them all! But I can live with it if I have to Wink
